Are boxers good guard dogs and how highly do you rate them to other breeds, we have got 2 male boxers called Paddy and Mac and just want to know, despite their loving temperament would they attack an intruder? I would like to hear any of your stories.:)

I surely don't consider my two killer attack dogs, but I do believe a boxer that is loved and treated well by it's family would do anything to protect them from harm. Any dog wanted for a guard dog should definately be trained by a professional.

I think a lot has to do with the temperament of the dog. Tyson was very protective of us. Not just the immediate family, but grandchildren also. My granddaughter was walking him up and down our street when she was 6 or 7 and a woman that lives at the corner crossed over to talk to Brittany and Tyson lunged and bit her. They were two houses down and we were in the yard watching and got there ASAP, but it happened very fast. The woman had been to my house many times with no reaction, but Tyson saw her as a threat to someone he loved and reacted when she got close to Brittany.

On the other hand, he let the kids dress him, poke him, roll on him, use him as a pillow, etc. After he bit the woman, I never felt quite safe leaving him in the room with the younger kids. Nothing ever happened tho and he was loving to the end.

With my two new ones, time will tell, but I think they will be protective of us too.

Hi Mack......are you named after my dog? Or is he named after you?! Actually, my Mack is named after the truck.
As much as I would like to think Mack would "be there" for me if I needed him.........I just can't picture it. He has no problem with people coming to the door, doesn't bark, just figures everyone comes to see *him*!
I had a female for 12 years that was the same way.....although she was dog aggressive. She would have let the bad guy get me, I'm afraid.....but a dog? NEVER!

All my boxers are excellent guard dogs. They will race to the main gates barking like mad if they hear something. This in itself is probably enough to ward off any potential intruder. As far as actually attacking someone?? Perhaps my senior bitch Rose might if provoked enough, but I am not sure. No one has been that brave, or stupid, to try and enter our property to find out!!!

I do know that when we are out walking in streets or parks they often have their heckles up if someone walks by and it is getting dark! Once a man approached me and they stopped in their tracks and growled very loud and low. The man ran to the other side of the street! I never feel afraid with 4 or 5 boxers in tow!!;)

Mine have all been protective. The first, Barry, was a birthday gift when I was 2. Once when we were on vacation, Barry stayed at my grandparents. When returned from an evening out their couch, which was placed in front of a picture window, was torn up. The next morning when they went out to the front porch, there were marks and scrapes all over the frame of the picture window. Someone had tried to break in and Barry's actions while damaging the couch upholstery had scared the burglers away. Reupholstering the couch was a small price to pay. Barry would also protect us. When I'd stay with my grandparents, he'd stay too. They had a lovely porch swing and Grandma would make up a bed on it. She'd rock the swing and I'd fall asleep. Barry would stay beside me to guard me, never leaving my side until I was awake and headed into the house.

One gal, Laurie, went to work with me and was know far and wide. She was wonderful. A terrifice companion, situation diffuser and a protector. Several times she was judiciously used to scare away unwanted, but persistant salesman. She also kept herself between me and whoever she didn't trust. She spent 45 minutes with hackles raised while growling nearly inaudibly while my husband and I met with an insurance salesman. We did not buy any policies from him!

According to one Boxer book, they were originally bred in the Black Forest for companionship and protection. The actions of mine certainly support that.

Mack,

In the USA, Service Dog means a dog trained to assist the disabled. These dogs are selected from non aggressive pups and then trained to be "people friendly". They have to be, they go everywhere with their human partners. The disabled are the group most victimized by crime.

Boxers, the first breed ever to be used as Service Dogs (1910), today partner people who are blind, deaf, lame, in wheelchairs etc.I have records of over 700 disabled Americans who are today, fortunate enough to be teamed with a Service Dog Boxer.

Not one of them has ever been successfully mugged. Not one of them has had their home successfully broken into when their Boxer Service Dog has been present.

Boxers are not, nor were they ever meant to be, "attack dogs". They are by their very nature, guard dogs. When I read of all the flashy, dramatic training some people put their Boxers through, when I read of how some people think that modern Boxers are not capable of protecting people, I have to laugh. I think of the statistics I just cited above, look at the aging, 70 pound partner at my side and ask myself if those doubters, those "protection" fanatics, have ever lived with a Boxer.

You are safe (twice over) my friend.

Your dogs will surprise you.

When I was in the hospital we had someone come by to let Bossk out(we didn't have Lucas then) and play with him for a few minutes. They came in the wrong door, a door we rarely used at that time and Bossk wouldn't let them in the house. That guy left and called us and said, "your dog growled at me." He wasn't going back. My husband called another friend, who came in the wrong door also and Bossk growled at him....when he came around and entered the front, Bossk acted normal.

Now while I know overall Bossk acted happy in the end, he knew Kinny from previous visits and most ppl are startled when they realize you have big dogs. Dogs sense this and it begans a cycle that feeds on itself. I imagine if Kinny was afraid of Bossk when he entered, Bossk's reaction would have been different. He always growls at ppl when they fear him.

Lucas's bark would scare off anyone. He has a low gruff mean sounding bark. My mother even assumes he is mean because of his voice. In reality, he is the biggest (titty) baby I have ever seen.

I certainly feel safe at home in the evenings while my husband is away.

The important thing to remember is aggression doesn't equal protection. That is one of the problems I see with some ppl. They think you need to make a dog mean or have an aggressive dog to have protection. And that simply isn't true. Dogs know when things aren't right and they will act accordingly.

Boxers are freindly natural protectors

Your dogs will surprise you, they can sense fear or if something is wrong and will act accordingly.
My AThena and Caesar are very friendly, but I believe when we are not around they would not let anyone near our place. Athena is about 72 lbs, and Casear is about 98, he steals his sisters food when she doesn't finish it and no one is looking.
The male is very protective, the female protects me from my daughters dog who has a habit of biting at feet when you walk and she gets in a playful mood, Athena will go after her and chase her away.
I believe anyone seeing these dogs on a property would definietly think twice about entering.
