I agree with you and Condopup I'm tired of hearing how hyper boxer's are. My Sadie is the most layed back boxer you'll ever meet and Star, for being four months old is pretty mellow her self...The only excitement around our house is when friends or family come for a visit and theres nothing but wiggle wiggles and the girls wanting to be acknowledged :) it last two to five minutes them all there sense's come back

I think Boxers are energetic, and easily excited around new people, and new things. Hyper NO. I have a Belgium Malinois that could disprove to a bunch of people that think Boxers are hyper.

Sarge is pretty easy going. He's not hyper at all and hes almost 4 months old. But I have seen a few extremely hyper dogs but again I think it was only because I was someone new to them and they wanted to show me their toys and play. Then on the other hand I know someone who has two boxers and they are very over weight, and lazy! I don't think this is healthy for them but they aren't my dogs. So I would rather have mine with a little extra energy! I have a nice big half acre yard for him to play in and get some excersize.

I have one VERY "excitable" boxer!! Spirit, (soon to be 2) is "Tigger on speed", and I have spent alot of time with him trying to train him to be calmer with guests..to the point of crating him! I have leashed him and had him sit by my side while greeting guests, but he just will not calm down. Company can be here for hours and he still persits on playing, constantly pawing at them or prancing in front of them with his cuz ball in mouth! He has these long super-model legs that, not intentionally on his part, will often connect a guest across the head or face, or if a male, often right in the family jewels!! He demands attention no matter where we are. Whereas Xena, on the other hand, is so much a layed-back gal..extrememly calm and always has been, even as a pup. Her manners have always been exquisite! :)
I have heard of the "brindle factor" (heard of this from BW members in the past) and have often wondered if him being brindle has anything to do with his over exuberance? My mother has a brindle and a fawn. Her brindle has always been "hyper" like my Spirit, but since he has grown (he's 6 now), he has calmed down and is very layed back like my moms fawn. So maybe it's also an age thing. Either way, I love my brindle "hyper" boy just as much as I love my calm and quiet fawn girl. :D

I've never heard of this, and must say the fawn boxers I know are all hyper, while my brindle boy and other brindles I've met are relatively calm. So in my experience it has been exactly the opposite! It could just be incidental either way but I'd be surprised to find out the coloration has any effect on their temperament/behavior.

Personally for me I think its the amount of excercise that Vegas gets. If he has had a good romp each day of the week he is well behaved and not "hyper". Give us one rainy day or he is inside for a day he is a totally different dog. Doesn't listen, gets into things and is just a general turkey, like a 3 year old child.

As someone else mentioned I think its training as well. They know what you expect from them when they are trained (or some of the time) so they behave a certian way so they don't get in trouble.

People used to say this to use about the breed when we were thinking of getting a Boxer. Then we got him, took him to obiedience and proved them wrong. Well, somedays we prove them wrong ;)

Holly, I should have elaborated more on that comment. What I meant when I said I have heard of the "brindle factor" from previous BW members, was that when I was about to bring Spirit home, some warned me of the difference between the 2, in a joking manner, because I already had Xena, my fawn girl, who is soooo calm. I believe it was Boxer21, one of our mods, who jokingly told me that in reference to her brindle babies.
Bottom line really is that boxers love humans, well, most of them anyway, and they are very happy to show them how friendly they can be. Humans are humans. Most read into and analyze things way too much.

From what I've seen at the dog park Labs/goldens have to be one of the most active dogs i've seen. Ali is wild when someone is at the door but other than that she is pretty good for 18 months. A guy at the park said the same thing to me today - he wouldn't get a boxer because of their high energy level - he had 2 german sheppards who ran for 2 hours before we arrived, what does that tell you? Most don't know what they are talking about.
