I will be moving my 3 1/2 year old boxer in with my fiance and her cat next weekend. They have been together in the same room quite a few times and my dog always chases her around until the cat hides underneath the bed. Has anyone had to go through the same process? Any help on making this transition a little bit easier would be appreciated. Thanks!

I had a stray cat before I got Penalty. She was really afraid of anyone and anytihng. But since Peanlty was a puppy, he adjusted quicker than she did. Then I got a kitten, and the vet suggested meeting each other for like 1 hour the first day- 2 the next- and gradual, because they get jealous. Now they are all best friends. It can work, you have to be patient.

Good luck!

He is a true boxer, hence his name...he likes to get into some brawls and some trouble!

Brian,

Boxers & Cats can get along...but you must Stop the chasing right away! Try keeping your boxer on a leash and everytime he tries to chase the cat give him a firm "NO" with a corective jerk on the leash (unless he is trained to "Leave It"). Also make one area of the home a "Cat Only" area and NEVER let the dog in there, perhaps where the litter or food is. This way Kitty will have a "Safe" place to go when it has had enough. I have sent some advice to others attempting to intergrate a household and may be able to give you some more advice if you wish it.

If you want to see proof of co-exsistance take a look at Greta's Family :D

Good luck!

Thanks for the good advice. We will be making the transition next weekend and I will let both of you know how it goes.

We have a cat..she is 10 now. We got our boxer about 3 months ago. And yes...its kind of a problem. When face to face...our boxer cries because he wants the cat to play with him. He will begin to paw at her, but all goes okay if our cat does'nt make a run for it. If our cat runs, then it gets chased by our boxer. I know he just wants to play...but he does kind of bite at her back or tail when he gets to chase after the cat. I know he would'nt hurt her on purpose...the nibbling and pawing is play, not aggression. He knows that its a no no though....he looks at us and whines when he's thinking about making a move because he knows we don't approve. We let him know this by having him sit and gently tug back on his colar and saying no in a firm voice. Things are getting a little better...but we always keep one eye consistantly on the situation.
Sincerely, TeriLynne

We have 2 cats living w/ our Boxer. The older cat thinks he is crazy and basically tolerates him. If the cat has to he can put the dog in his place, cats are tougher than you think, and the dog learns quickly. However the second cat, which is just 6 mos old, loves the boxer. Follows him around, sleeps w/ him. But the 1st week we had him, he was terrified of the dog, but inseperable since then. So give it time, and I bet they will at least learn to tolerate each other, or maybe even become friends. The dog just needs to learn his own strength and weight when dealing w/ the cat (you may have to remind him, I always have to). Good luck

Boomer does the same thing. He whines and paws at Baxter because he wants to play with him so very badly!
