Boxers and cats?

again, i'm a new boxer owner so you can take any info i have with a grain of salt, but from what i read it is usually easiest when the puppy is raised around the cat in order for them to get along... your grandmothers cats probably won't be too friendly ever with the dog since they don't live together...

that being said, we've only had jasper for two weeks, and our 9 year old cat doesn't necessarily like him, but i think she is getting more and more used to him... easier for us to let them mingle though since she is declawed... dunno if we'd be as comfortable if she wasn't..... he having fun with her cuz right now they are the same size.

We had peace and harmony, sort of, before the 2nd foster came. Then all hell broke loose b/c the 1st one followed him into chasing the cat. He didn't want to hurt her, just hold her down and lick her. After the 1st time with his tongue ending up in her ear, that was not an option. After he went to a different foster home, I decided to resume a peaceful kingdom atmosphere. You can squawk if ya wanna but I saw Ceasar do it and it worked. I'm not down with the "let them work it out" method. Not my dog, no blood shed on my watch.

I had my son sit with the dog and I sat with the cat. We all sat side by side on the couch. We pet them while they stared and if one went to move we gave a correction. We did it twice and now the dog doesn't move when the cat comes to sniff. They can walk by w/out an issue and even sit on opposite ends of the loveseat at the same time. If the cat flys from one end of the living room down the hall and into the kitchen the dog wants to go too. If we catch her quick with a firm "No" OR "Leave It", she stays put.

And when the puppy comes home in 2 weeks, I'll do the same thing.

kittens?

So would you say taht perhaps us getting a kitten and introducing her to our 5 month old pup might be better than a full grown cat? That way they grow up together? hmmm????

I have two adult cats and 3 dogs. The one cat wants nothing to do with the dogs at all, whatsoever. She stiffens up when they get near. The boxer is the only one that I have trouble with and she came as a puppy into the house. She will be calm to the cats, but if she gets close enough, she gives them a nose bump. A year later, she still does it. I can't get her to stop. Cats are declawed, so they have no defense to get her back. They run from her and the 3 dogs go chasing after.

Now my one cat is an over eater and over sleeper. The other has licking anxiety and is bald on both back legs and his belly. But pretty normal otherwise.

I just know they won't ever get along. But I am pretty sure each dog is safe with them. I worry about them developing a pack mentality and going after one of them some day. I just don't let the dogs in the cat zone when I am not home to referee.

my pup doesnt know what a cat is up close, but, yesterday i let him out for a potty this morning and a cat was in the bushes out back and it freaked hayden out at first. then he went into boxer mode and chased that sucker down

my cat, who is very scared of most people, is fine with my dogs. when we brought diesel home, i don't think either of them really noticed each other at all. then i kind of did the "look, diesel, that's francis." and francis and diesel locked eyes, and we didn't see the cat for a few days. she just hid upstairs. now she sits on the arm of the couch while we all hang out in the living room. and when we brought dexter home, then kingston, she didn't change her behavior at all because i guess 1 dog is the same as 3 to her. she knows she can take them all anyway. they chase her, she likes it, she ASKS for it. she sits at the bottom of the stairs, waits for them to come a little close, then runs! and then 2 minutes later, she's back in the same spot... over and over and over. it's cute. i'm glad they're all friends. and when they get too close, she swipes at them, and they back off. each one of them is too much of a scaredy cat (haha) to actually touch her.


oh, and i don't want to be judgemental or anything, but god what an awful thing to declaw your cat. claws are how a cat defends itself. not to mention, that must hurt crazy. poor kitties.
