We had our 7 month old boxer, Sophie, to the vet earlier this evening. She was there as a follow up because she had crystals in her urine and had been on prescribed dog food. The vet gave her a clean bill of health and cut her toenails. On the way home, she started to vomit. As soon as we got home, she vomited with some blood in the vomit. She became very lethargic, her breathing was rapid and she seemed cold. Since then, she has coughed up blood and vomited more food with some blood in it. Her breathing is still rapid and she is very lethargic. She seemed fine one minute and very seriously ill the next. My wife called the vet's office right away and they did not seem overly concerned. When she later coughed up blood, my wife tried calling the emergency on call number for our vet. This person also did not get overly concerned and said that he would see Sophie tomorrow if nothing has changed. We are very concerned about her. Any thoughts of what may be wrong with her? Thanks

I personally would be putting a call into the emergency vet, I do tend to overreact, but vomitting blood doesn't seem normal to me at all. If there is an after hours vet where you are, it will be costly( probably $100 just to walk in), but worth it to know that your baby is not in any danger, if she is, then they will be equipped to handle it. Hope she feels better soon, please update us on her.

If she's vomiting blood she could have a GI bleed. Has she recently been on an antibiotic (did she have a UTI since she had crystals?) or some type of pain med for the crystals? If she poops, check her poop for traces of blood, as well.

I'd get Sophie to a vet ASAP. I can't understand why the vet would not be concerned. Please keep us posted.

getting better

Hi All! Mu DH wrote our last post, I am sending in the reply. I couldn't get anyone to look at Sophie last night. It was a long, long night. She doesn't breath well sometimes. Other times she is fine. She is still drooling the thick mucus type drool. She has gone outside to tinkle and walked on her own back in. She wagged her tail twice this morning! I can't understand the total change in this dog. One minute fine the next completely different. I am so mad at the vets I dealt with last night. Thanks for thinking of her. I will update soon. Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it.

One thing, Sophie did choke on a small piece of stick last week. Really coughed and coughed and I tried to get it out for her, but it didn't work. So then she swallowed it and seemed fine. I mentioned it to the vet tech when I called about a different urine sample. She said to make sure that she kept pooping and was OK. She was fine. Maybe it is just now affecting her. This was almost exactly a week ago. Let me know what you think.........thanks!

Puppy kisses from Sophie! Thanks from Jami & Tim

update

HI all! Thanks for reading our Thanksgiving Day nightmare! At any rate, Sophie has rested a lot today and has more energy now. She is doing better, but we tried to give her some food at the emergency on-call vet's advice (he won't see her, just talks to me on the phone) and she of course vomitted all back up. No blood, just a lot of thick mucus around it all. So, since the poor thing is litterally starving, I gave her some plain pasta (just a little) a few hours later. She has taken some water in as well. Just trying to keep her calm (which is NOT hard today, so it's scarey!!!) I will be calling the vet in the morning.

She did have an antibiotic but was done with it 2 weeks ago. She also had an anti-inflamatory, but that too was finished. Her stool had looked blackish for a while while on the meds but the vet said that was due to the meds and not a real issue. My mom suggests seeing a new vet. I like this vet because she is good, but maybe we will consider it after all.

Well, thanks again, I hope someone will write us with their opinions, I love hearing the feedback. Thanks for all the input and puppy kisses from Sophie.

Since she's so hungry I would try giving her a bland diet of boiled chicken & rice, that may work a little better. Also if she swallowed a stick, I am thinking it maybe could have irritated her throat. Most likely, the thick drool is coming from nausea & hunger. I myself would be looking for a new vet! Anytime my dog has been vomitting, especially more than 5 times, I've been instructed to withold food & water to give his system a chance to balance out. Hopefully she will be seen tomorrow and you can find out some answers. Sending healing vibes , and hope that your baby is feeling better soon.

Thanks!!!

HI there. Thanks. We had started her on the pasta and she held it down and now we are going to do the chicken and rice. When I phoned the vet they told me to do the bland diet too and if she vomitted any more today to bring her in. There has been no more of that so far today and her stool looks OK, not great, but no blood. So......I guess we wait it out. I wish this puppy of mine would be healthy.....thanks for the thoughts and the healing vibes......she really needs them!!!! Jami

Just a thought here....you might try getting some pedialyte. It will help with the missed meals and provide some energy. I hope all is well soon.
