Boxer Tearing Paws Apart --> Vet Doesn't Know Why

Our boxer is 1 year 2 months old. Great health aside from a slight heart murmur discovered a few months ago. He’s on a diet of the Royal Canin designed for boxers. He’s crypt orchid, and we recently had him neutered.

On the day of the surgery his right paw swelled up to the size of baseball. The vets took a look at it during the surgery, in between the pads, and found nothing wrong, no cuts, anything. Following the surgery things went well, aside from his paw being so swollen. The doctor’s gave us some anti-inflammatory meds and the swelling soon went down.

The next few days the swelling went down, but his licking the paw went up. We had noticed him licking his paws once in awhile in the past before the surgery – though very intermittently – licking the inside of his front paw sometimes after he came in, or just when lounging around. Again, rarely if ever.

Within 2 days he licked/chewed his paw to the point where we finally noticed it getting raw and set up an appointment with the vet. The next day he had nearly chewed off the top of his paw. The vet was unable to suture it because we had had to wait for the night to go to the appointment, so it’s healing open. His paw is now wrapped up, and will be for a few weeks. When we take the post-surgery head cone off he’ll immediately begin to go for the wrapped paw. We attribute him going for the wrapped paw because of the wrapping on it.
But NOW he’s going for his other three paws WITH the cone on and we’re having a hard time stopping him when we’re not around. They’ve begun to get to the point where they’re reddening too.

The vet called in a doctor of internal medicine to diagnose what could be causing him to do it. They said this is nothing that they’ve ever seen. Not allergies, not self-mutilation, not nerve damage making his paw numb and causing him to do it, not food allergies, no fractures or paws. A whole list of possibilities that it normally could be – each possibility ruled out because of a critical element lacking. The vets are at a lost.

We’re currently re-wrapping his paw everyday to let it heal. But we were told that our next and really our only option is to drive to Cornell to talk to researchers/doctors about what it could be.

Does ANYONE have ANY clue what this could be? He gets tons of attention, so self-destructive behavior is likely ruled out. He’s been on Royal Canin for about 4 months now, before that Canidae. ANY sort of help or insight would be immensely appreciated. If you need any additional info to trouble shoot let me know and I’ll provide it as soon as I can. Thanks in advance!!!!

Our Dino has allergies to various pollens but he has been chewing at his paws all over the winter making them go red and stained brown.

Vet thought there was a possibility he may be sensitive to yeast, which all dogs have on their body, so over the past few weeks we have been washing his paws twice a week with Malaseb shampoo and it seems to be working.

Has your vet suggested anything like this?

Chewing paws is a typical allergy response. Why does your vet say that it's not allergies?

X19er - no the vet hadn't mentioned that but maybe I'll look into that on his other feet.

Jan - the vet said the way his swelling was wasn't indicative of allergies, because one paw had swollen and that had been it, nothing anywhere else on his body.

We're gonna switch his food from Royal Canin to Blue Buffalo and see if that helps at all, just in case it is allergies. Also, i was reading about dust mites and think that might play a role in it to, our place tends to get really dusty during the winter.

Okay, I've heard of pets having OCD disorders. Maybe, by chance, he has something such as that. I have heard this treated with certain medications, such as they do in humans. If they don't think it is allergies, and nothing changes when you try a new food, I would definately talk to your vet about that. Another thing that comes to my mind with the first paw, did he get bit by something? That might explain part of it, but not why he is now moving on to the other three paws, which makes me wonder about a disorder. Good luck and keep us posted. I'm interested to see what they figure out. :)

I think its a good idea you try switching foods incase it is an allergy (Titan chews her paws raw from allergies). I would suggest looking for a grain-free food as many allergies are associated with grains. It helped a LOT when we switched to Holistique Blenz for Titan...she used to break out it hives!

I also vaccum and change out the air vents a LOT. I can tell if the house is too dusty because Titan's nose will run. :(

Finally, see if 2 Benydryl will help. We give Titan 2 with breakfast and 2 with dinner. We avoid steriods as they decrease thier life span and impact their internal organs.

Good luck!!!

we changed his food to innova evo and he's seemed to have cut down going for the other paws. After changing his food we embarrassingly remembered that he loves to eat meaty bone dog biscuits - according to the nutrition facts they're loaded with all the top suspects of allergies, so those are in the garbage. I'm thinking the dog biscuits may have been the problem, but its probably best we changed all food at once to see if its the filler stuff. Hopefully it'll be the source of the problem.
