Good luck with your situation. I just want to agree with the others about providing vet and training refrerences if possible. Even if a landlord initially says no, it wouldn't hurt to attempt to change his/her mind.
Have you tried putting your own ad in the paper? Mention the dog and how how well behaved/trained he is, and also mention that you can provide excellent references on behalf of his behavior and disposition. Some dog lover out there(aren't they great?) might see it and help you out.
