you people are absolutely unbelievable..i cannot believe the anger coming from everyone. i never meant to downgrade boxer rescues(for the person who pulled out all my comments) why didnt you pull out the one that said i believe that it is a good organization.i can at least say that i understand why you charge what you do(doesnt mean i agree with it) but i do understand the expense you put in,however, you insist on justifying the thousands of dollars you put into your dogs and guarantee them good homes..please, there are no guarentees with anything. i read several letters from foster parents or adoptees that had to return rescue dogs for one reason or another.
yes, i have helped in shelters and i know first hand that they take care of their animals, and i repeat, alot of shelters are becoming no kill shelters, so they have the dogs, cats, etc. in their care for the animals life. i also have seen them put alot of money into taking care of those animals that were sick or injured. the humane society can justify just as much money as you do, but they dont advertise that they had to spend all that money on vets bills, surgeries etc. this is why they rely on donations and hold fund raisers often. if they dont have the funds to take care of an animal that is severly sick or injured, then i guess this is where the part comes in that you say they just euthenize them then...well, maybe they should up there prices for the animals to 2 or 3 hundred dollars. WOW, just think of all the unwanted animals that would be out there then.
now, lets go to horse rescues. i worked with several. most of them charge anywhere between 2-7 hundred to adopt. the ones that are adopted for 2-3 hundred are ussually older horses but are still very servicable. the ones they adopt for 7 hundred are good young horses that most people would normally pay 2-3 thousand for. they not only have emmense vet bill, farrier bills, dentist bills etc. but have to provide them with adequate pasture(must have alot of acreage, maintain that land(which gets destroyed very quickly with horses)provide hay and grain, pay people to remove the manure that piles up, provide a huge building to house them in, trailers to haul them to vets if necessary,(one surgery for a horse was 10,000 dollars) people with enough experience to come in and train them..and the list goes on. they also evaluate the people they adopt them to and regularly check on them after they are adopted(this is usually done by volunteers)so how do you think they exist. lets do a comparison here. a horse that you would normally pay 2-3 thousand for, you are now getting for 7 hundred..huge price difference there. where as a dog you can get for 400 hundred, you get get from a rescue for 3, and why is it that the price stays the same no matter what the age of the dog??
your right, most reputable breeders dont sell their dogs for that little amount, but paying alot of money for something doesnt give you a guarentee that nothing will go wrong,and when it comes to animals, most people know this.i know someone who paid 1500 for their dog and a yr later it died, after they spent 1000 more to try to save it. most people (the general puplic im speaking about here) not the ones that are soo knowledgeable as you, are going to pay the 4-5 hundred for a puppy(which they know has no problems at the time,( physically or temperament) as opposed to a rescue dog for 3 hundred, who, in their eyes,and i stress in their eyes, not mine, are rescue dogs for a reason, mostly because of aggression problems, physical problems or just plain old and feeble. most of the general puplic are not aware of puppy mills and most people initially will think of cost for the animal before anything else. if they can get a puppy for 4 hundred, instead of one for one thousand from a "reputable" breeder they will.
as far as the statement about if you cant afford 3 hundred you shouldnt have a dog, thats a rediculous statement. you shouldnt buy a car then because there is a chance it could break down on you and you might have to spend thousands of dollars to repair it, or a house for that matter. i just spent 1500 dollars to try to save my boxer. when you have a dog thats part of your family and you truly love it, you will pay the money(find a way to get it) to try and save them. i didnt have the 1500 for my dog that i could just pull out of my pocket,i had to beg, borrow for it, but i loved my dog and wanted to do what i could for him, even though i had to put him down in the end. the whole point of this was to gear your mind to how the general(unknowledgeable)puplic think. and of course everyone i posed this question to had to agree with what i was saying. you continue to charge what you do, charge a thousand if you want, but as i said from the beginning and im saying now, alot of good people and good homes will be turned down because of this, not because its right or wrong, but because thats the way most people are.
so, if someone wanted to get a boxer and had a choice between paying 400 for a puppy or 1200,or, if someone wanted to adopt one and had a choice between paying 40 dollars or 300 dollars(and yes, you can find boxers at the humane society i for one got two good ones there), which ones do you think most people(not all) would buy??
i"ll end it with this, i love my boxers, they are the most awesome funny dogs that i have ever owned and i owned dogs all my life(boxers for the past 14 yrs)a boxer is all i want. but since i just spent all that money trying to save my last boxer, im sorry to say that i just cant afford 300 for one at this point...thats my problem...turning away good people and homes for boxers that desperately need one...thats your problem.
