boxer puppy with gas problems

Help!
My nine week old boxer pup has alot of gas and most of the time is when he is sleeping.It gets so bad at times I want to run out of the house.I have changed his food from Purina to Kibbles n Bits and even tried Science Diet but no luck.No he doesn't have gas everyday or I don't smell it 24/7 but it gets bad.So do you no if this is a common problem with the breed and should I be concerned with his health?

Oh those lovely gas attacks...... I was told by the breeder we got Ruby from that the breed is a gasy breed so I wouldn't worry too much about it. My Ruby does it while he sleeps too, especially when he was a pup, now that he's older I don't smell it as often. Either that or I got used to it :rolleyes: Some members on this board suggested mixing a spoonful of plain lowfat yogurt with his food. I found that to be helpful in ways that he will still fart but it won't kill anyone, just a psfff.... and no smell :o . Best of luck.....

Ditto on the tablespoon of yogurt.

If the gas does continue, I would mention it to your Vet, and see if he recommends a certain brand. Although gas is unpleasant to smell, remember it can be uncomfortable for the dog, too.

I think all dogs have some gas, but ours is a bloat prone breed and it's best to keep gas at a minimum.

Ever notice the Dog on the "Gas Aid" bottle at the pet store is a Boxer?

Well thank you for the shared information.Now I feel a little better that my boxer is not the only one who has this problem.I will try the yogurt and any other sugestions...

Gas is a common problem with boxers. Lou gets pretty stinky sometimes, too. You might consider a higher quality food than the ones you have tried, however, as the food you feed does make a big difference in their overall health and a low quality food with a lot of fillers might exacerbate the gas problem. You can do a search for food and you'll get lots of great info on what food is better for your dog.

After we switched to Nutro LBP his gas/ poop improved. Avoid food containing lots of additives especially CORN.

Food Suggestion

I've got 2 dogs, 1 boxer, 1 civilian and when both were under 1 year, I had them on Iam's puppy, Lamb and Rice. One hit a year, the other (the boxer) still had a few months to go. Nicky the boxer has SO much gas, I sure was proud of her when my buddies were over drinking beer and watching the game, she rivaled and of my guy friends, for sure, hehehe.

But, it was getting bad, she would wake me up with the smell, the noise was just cute.
The vet told me to go ahead and move her to the adult brand, before 1 year, and the gas was cut in half! She still has it but not as bad. Mostly now is noise.
The tiny bottle of drops, sorry I forgot the name, but it was about 9 bucks, lasts about a month....I used 9 drops in her dinner meal only (not breakfast meal since they were outside all day usually) and that did well too. I will post again with the name when I find it.

As advised above, keep away from the cheap foods, high filler contents, and lots of corn. Fish oils seem to help the GI tract greatly.

And of course, NO people food. Remain consistent with what you try, don't switch foods within 2-3 days, let the dog adjust, and if it isn't working, move on slowly. Hopping around every other day will only make it worse.

Seriously, though, about the gas: My vet (also a Boxer owner) recommends Eukanuba for the gas problem. Honestly, I can't afford it, I use Iams. Still, she insists that it does work.
