I have never heard of giving a dog zyrtec. Benedryl yes. I have had issues with my girls feet in the past. With us it seems to be something with the change of the season. They get a bit dry and form some scabs. She does quite a bit of licking. I use some Neem Shampoo and Neem Protect Spray to give her some relief. How long have you had the pup and what are you feeding.

It can take a while for a food allergy to clear a dog's system, sometimes well over a month. And the food allergy could be to the protein source not the grain. With allergies it can be a hit miss nightmare finding the culprit. That being said it could also be an enviromental allergy, or it could be both. I know that can be a lot to take in. I had a dog with both food and enviromental. My house cleaning needed to be steped up. Vacuuminmg and dusting sometimes twice a week. Steaming my caprets monthly, except in late fall, when I did it at least every 2 weeks or weekly depending on how bad things were that particular year. Air filter must be changed at least monthly. Our laundry detergent is mild, (but that has always been true because I have allergies to detergents.) and I didn't use fabric softners on her bedding. I hope you find the cause soon, and it is something easily worked around.

Im having the same problem with my boxer pup he's 9 months old now and he suffers from itiching and scratching, he bites his paws untill they bleed and will sit there scratching his ears untill they bleed, crying at the sametime! Its a nightmare, Im considering getting him allergy tested now but i do think his food is possibly to blame, it has a high rice content so im going to switch him to a grain free diet. Good luck!

Allergies are frustrating and takes time figuring out what the causes are. There is tons of information on BW.

And yes you can use other antihistamines other than benadryl. You can use zyrtec, claratin and others. NEVER use any antihistamines that have a decongestant ingredients in them. Ask your vet for dosage.

I would highly recommended you seek out a veterinary dermatologist.
