Boxer or Weimaraner

My neighbor HAD two Weims when I moved here in September. (they live behind me and we share the same back fence). They get along great with my dogs, they run up and down the fence and play through the fence. But I guess my neighbor has had lots of problems with them destroying things. They eat up his yard, one is VERY attached to him and litteraly plowed through the neighbors fence next to him to go in the yard when his master was over there for a visit! So he got to replace the fence. The same dog also jumped the fence, another time, into the same neighbors yard and chewed on his new bar-b-que grill. Maybe for the smell of meat? Anyway he ended up finding a new home for the one that kept getting out b/c we could not keep him out of my yard either. He would LITTERALY CHEW through our wooden fence to get to my dogs to play with! I did not complain, I AM a dog lover, but his owner just got tired of replacing boards every day. But, on the dogs behalf, my neighbor has three small girls and both Weimes were great with them!
But I say, GO FOR A BOXER :D

I wanted a Weimaraner or Rottweiler to begin with...when we were first talking about getting a dog (my husband wanted a Boxer or Bulldog)

I heard they were VERY hyper dogs, but you know...its always from "somebody who knows somebody whos aunt's sister has one" or something like that.

However, one day, a few months before we got Legend, we were at Petsmart and this couple had a BEAUTIFUL female Weim. I stopped to pet her, because they ARE gorgeous dogs. I told them that I wanted one and their eyes got wide and they said "They are very high-strung...hope you have a lot of patience and energy." They looked almost exasperated! Even while they were in line, she couldn't sit still...that sorta clinched it for me.

I'm glad we went with a boxer after all ;)

By the way Eddie's Mom....here's a pic of a Weim...

A male weimeraner nearly took Susie's ear off one day on our park in Brooklyn. A totally unprovoked attack on Susie by the Weimeraner. My dad had one which he wanted to use for hunting, but could never train it to do anything but jump and run around. Very hyper dog.

Why not a Mastiff? I think they are great dogs too.

Alot of the posts here describe the dogs as being destructive. My boxer was very destructive (and I'm not talking shoes, belts and an occasional couch either). I learned the hard way..the dog is as you train it to be. If your dog is properly trained you will have a well behaved dog. Some are easier to train than others of course ;) Properly exercised dogs are also better behaved dogs. My dogs bounce off of the walls at home too if they don't get enough exercise. If you read all the posts here, nobody is speaking from experience. In order to make a valid statement you must own the breed..not babysit it, not visit it, etc. You really won't know until you talk to some Weim owners. You already have a boxer so you don't need us to reiterate what a great breed the boxer is...do the weim owners have a board similar to ours somewhere? I bet you could get good first hand info there!!

We have a couple of really close friends that have a weim that has grown up with Nedra and everytime they play, I start finding scabs all over N's neck a couple of days afterwards. I'm pretty sure that it is just the way he plays, but he does get nippy with her. They don't have as soft of mouths as boxers do.

He seems like he is more laid back than N is, and it is nice that you can curl up with him, as Nedra is a spaz if you even try to sit on the floor with her.

Just the other night we were out walking and a guy walking a weim past us had to pull his lunging, snarling, screaming and growling weim away from Nedra. Nedra was taken aback and looked at him like, "What in the WORLD is your problem?!"

The thing that I worry about with weims is that they became too popular too fast. When dogs become popular, out come poor breeding practices to keep up with the demand for the dogs. This is where poor temperament and health begin to rear their ugly heads. In the 80's it was dobermans, early 90's it was rotties, whenever a 101 Dalmations movie comes out, it is dals, and so on and so forth. Right now weims are really popular and boxers are getting there. This is why it is important that you do your homework and find a good breeder that is concerned with type, temperament, and health.

Good luck in finding your dog, I hope this helps.

BTW - My vote is for boxer. I have a female and she loves *everybody*, too much sometimes in fact.

Not too sure on the Weimaraner but our last female boxer was just great. We would go to the dog park all the time and she never had a problem with aggression. I think that was due to other dog socialization from the puppy stage. Good luck though. Weimaraners are beautiful dogs.

Spot's gotten on well with the Weimeraners he's been with at daycare. The daycare people also said that they were more energetic than some dogs... sort of like the terriers....

I think that they are beautiful dogs. But, every time I go to pet one, they jump & run away... so I haven't been close enough to one long enough to find out what they are really like....I think that Nedra's Mommy is right about the breeding issue.... And Aimee about the training issue....

So, what was the decision? Did you get dog #2?

I absolutely wanted a Weim as my first own dog. They are so beautiful! But the more I was learning on them, the more I realised it was not a dog for me right now. They are absolutely not dogs that can live in an appartement. They need a lot of exercise or they will destroy everything and can be very noisy! They are not easy to train too, they need a owner who is experience with dogs. I finish having a boxer, it was a breed more suitable for me at the moment, and I'm sure I couldn't make a better choise!

I have a female boxer.

And to be honest I have never seen another dog that is friendlier to other dogs then my boxer.

When we take her to the dog park she is the most playfull fun dog there.

The other female boxers I see there are also very playfull.
My dog has never even as much as growled at another dog, let alone become agressive with one.

The only problems I've had with my dog at the dog park was..

Another male boxer keeps trying to *mount* her.

Someone left their 8 week old beagle puppy unattended and my dog *played* with it. She was not agressive in the least, but the size difference did cause the little puppy to get flipped a lot =) The puppy was fun.

I see more problems with Labs then any other dogs to be honest. They seem to be more territorial and god forbid their owner brings one of their toys to the park.

We have a 7 month old Weim in our obedience class and just being around her one hour a week is ENOUGH for me! She's is ALWAYS hyper and jumping around and trying to pull out of her collar. I don't know how her owners stand it! They even said that they didn't research the breed very well, and only went with it because she is 'pretty'. Now, they think they are in way over their heads.

Why don't you get an adult from a Weim rescue? They would probably be a bit more calm than a puppy would.

I'm soooooo glad we didn't get a Weimaraner...they are beautiful to look at, but I wouldn't want to have to train one!
