I am wondering if anyone with leather car seats has came up with a good way to keep them from getting scratched up with those boxer toenails?
I have just been putting a blanket under Cisco, but he always manages to get it all twisted and not over the seat. I had thought about getting a seat cover for the spot he is always at. Just wondering if anyone has thought of anything else?
Also, I am guessing that since passenger side airbags are not safe for kids, they are probly not safe for dogs either. Anyone know for sure about this?
Thanks!
Mandy

I can't help with the seat situation, but the air bags I can. I am a manager at a car dealership and an asked this all the time and in my opinion it is not safe to have your dogs in the front seat when an airbag deploys. Unsafe for dogs and children for the same reason. When the airbags deploy they inflate at chest level, thats face level for most of our furbabies. I guess hitting the airbag is better than going thru the window, but I would rather have them in the back seat stapped in or in a kennel.

What kind of car do you have? I have a mustang with leather(admittedly I belive backs may not be real leather) but the fronts are and I've never had a problem with him puncturing the surfaces. I would also admit to not being the MOST on the ball with keeping his nails trimmed either but they really don't get too long for some reason...

Hi Mandy

We have leather seats in our Jeep and since Jag rides in the center of the back seat we put a seat cover right down the center of the seat and he rides with a harness so he can sit or lay down but doesn't move around in the seat much so no problems with the nails.
Good Luck!

I use a blanket in the car under Toffee to protect the leather seats. I use a big one, so I drape it over the back with plenty of extra blanket on that side--and over the entire back seat of my SUV lengthwise too. It doesn't move around much. Plus she's in a seat belt, so maybe that helps keep it from moving too much because she doesn't move too much.

I have leather seats with no covers and have not had any problems with scratches or punctures. However, I still wish I had covered the seat because it gets dirty very quickly and if I make a sharp turn, my two pups have no traction and go sliding.

You might want to find a local auto upholsterer and see what they charge for a seat cover. You would have your choice of materials and colors and the dogs would not be sliding around scratching up your leather anymore.
My husband owns an auto upholstery shop, and making a cover is a fairly easy job that could be done in no time.

Mine is a 2 seater with leather seats and front and side air bags. My owners guide says not to use seat covers as they will interfere with the side air bags. I use Carley's first dog bed when she rides in the car. It's way too small for her now but it covers the seat perfectly! It doesn't slip around like a towel does.

I purchased a new car 6 months ago with leather seats. I had the same concern that you do. I used a blanket for the first month or so and then figured I'd try it without. I've never had any problems with the exception of the lack of traction that the dogs have. Like someone said earlier, they do get dirty but I have a recommendation for that. Armor all makes a product called Leather Wipes (I believe that's the name). They come in a tube and you can just pull a sheet or two out at a time. After the kids get done riding in the back seat, I use these and it gets the dirt and hair off the seat not to mention that it conditions the leather when you wipe it down!!!
