Boxer Limping

I have a 14 month old male Boxer. He is my first dog and I am enjoying being a Boxer owner. This morning when he woke up, he was limping. I am not sure if his leg just fell a sleep. We (wife and I) checked his feet and felt around his leg and there were no visible or indications of pain. After he was walking around for a while it seemed to go away until he laid back down and then got back up. It has been very cold recently. He does sleep inside but goes outside to play, use the bathroom, etc.

Would anyone have an idea what could be causing this? Any advise would be helpful

Is it just one leg? Did you check around the hip area? I would just keep an eye on him and see if it persists.

He could have torn a muscle or a ligament, possibly his ACL. The symptoms of a torn ACL, as described in this previous post, are almost identical to your boxer's symptoms.

How many steps does the limping last? Oscar has a habit of always laying on his left leg, then gets up and is limping around for awhile. It usually takes care of itself. This does not happen daily though. How often does it happen to your fella?

Is it a hind leg that he's favoring? It's definitely possible that he has a torn ACL. Lola recently tore her ACL but since it was a complete tear, she wasn't putting any weight at all on the leg. Now that we're 7 weeks post surgery, she doesn't limp at all except for when she gets up after laying down for a while. She will hold the leg up for a few steps and then start putting weight on it again. If your guy is still putting weight on the leg, it could be a partial tear. Definitely keep an eye on it because it might require a trip to the vet. Please let us know which leg you think it is.

Here is a thread that I had going for a while.

My dog gets like that too and its only when he wakes up from sleeping. It happened again a week and a half ago, too. This time it seems to be his back left hip. I took him back to the vet and the vet said that it is probably just growing pains.

You might want to have the vet do x rays if it happens again or two more times. Make sure they get them on at least two legs so they can compare, and if it ever switches legs you'll have that xray. :) Only bc HOD can usually be spotted by xrays (more so when they are a bit older, however).

Anyways, check out that link it might be able to help you because it is similar to my problem with Kaiser!
