About 4 months ago my male boxer Cajun climbed/jumped out of a window that is 4 1/2 feet off the ground in our basement where he stays with his brother a rat terrier named Charlie while we are at work. When my wife got home she found Cajun in the back yard trying to drag himself to her with a terribly broken rear leg. She rushed him to the emergency vet who stabilized him and splinted the leg until we could take him to an orthopedic veterinarian the next day. The orthopedist did everything he could before telling us that Cajun's leg would have to be removed. We asked several vets what kind of quality of life he could expect with three legs and they all said he would be fine. Since he was such a young strong dog he would adapt quickly. We had the surgery which went very well and brought Cajun home. I'm happy to report that after a few rough days when he was still very sore and tired Cajun has continued to improve every day. Now four months after the accident you would never know that he only had three legs. He runs and plays as fast and as hard as ever. We have made some special arrangements reccomended by the vet such as feeding him up off of the floor and getting him a super plush bed and he is doing great. I just thought I would share this story incase anyone is ever in a similar circumstance. Please share with me any stories you may have about three legged dogs as we are always looking for more good news about Cajun's future

I am glad Cajun recovered well from the accident. I know a friend who has a three legged cat (also hit by a car). I will ask her if she has some advices to give. Her cat is doing fine.

A friend of mine works at a Pit Bull rescue, he had 3 pits, all rescued. Tripod was his 3-legged dog.
Tripod was found out in the woods caught in an illegal trap, he had already started to loosen himself from it. They amputated, and my friend adopted him.
All three of the pits were male, and Tripod was the alpha. All of them were very well behaved dogs, they rarely tried to break the positioning of the alpha. All three of them would run around like crazy, up hills down hills, chasing balls jumping, and playing with the kids.
Tripod lived a full life, and went to the bridge at 9.
I wouldn't worry too much about your baby, Cajun will compinsate for the lost limb. In the future you may want to keep an eye out for hip problems due to the rear being a bit off balance. You are very sweet parents for nursing your baby back to health, I could not imagine coming home and finding what your wife did.

Here is to a long life together!What a lucky dog!! My Sayde Lynn got hit by a car in February and unfortunatlyor fortunately she didn't live through it. I say fortunately because I don't know if I would be as strong as you if my dog had lost her leg. She was great, she did jumping and retireving classes and obedience competitions. She was always happy and always playful. I don't think that she would have recovered quite as well. I'm glad that your baby made it through though and he sounds like an amazing dog!!
My 3 year old Kenzie was hit by a car 2 years ago. The X-rays showed the back leg was so bad it looked like she stepped on a bomb. the vet said he would do the best surgery possible but the pieces in her leg were shattered. well i told him to fix her and he did. 2 years later you would never knew. she jumps, runs, plays on her leg( chasing my 5 month old boxer pup Maggie) i know that later in life she might have terrible arthritis and i think sometimes the weather aggravates it, but she definitely deserved a second chance. They are amazing animals and deserve all the chances in the world for survival/

I'm SO happy to hear Cajun is doing well...that gives me hope that someone will want to adopt my neighbor's sweet boxer girl...

A few years ago we went to the coast on vacation and were walking along the docks when we saw a 3 legged dog running around on a shrimp boat. We stopped and talked to the Captain and he told us the dog's leg had been bitten off by a shark when it was a pup. I don't know if the story was true or not, but the dog went out with the shrimpers every day and had no problems managing to run around on a wet, slippery deck. Hope your dog is as happy as the one we saw, he was a clown and entertained all of us.
