Boxer Owners and Pet Lover alike,

Hi, I’m the owner of an 8 month old, fawn boxer named Ike and like so many others I too have just recently been faced with a possible major health issue. This past Saturday after playing with Ike outside for a good hard 20 minutes and then I brought him inside which is when he started coughing very slightly, then started to loose his balance and suddenly collapsed. (He actually did this once before but the situation was totally different. The first time it happened he was sleeping I heard him cough slightly and then it happened but it only lasted for a couple of sec. and then he was fine, like nothing ever happened. It happened so fast that I honestly thought he was just having a bad dream, it made not sense to me at that time.)

Back to what I was originally saying, when Ike collapsed he did’t shake but his legs became stiff and he started drooling profusely. This episode was quite obviously different and it lasted for about a min. When the episode was over and he regained consciousness but he wasn’t the same, he seemed very disoriented and weak. I knew something was defiantly wrong and without hesitation I immediately took him to an emergency veterinarian. The only hard test that was performed was an X-ray which showed pulmonary Edema (fluid in the lungs). The veterinarian also suggested the presence of a “possible” soft heart murmur which somehow went un-detected by three other different veterinarians during three other different routine examinations. The possible prognosis of Ike’s episode was heart disease or more commonly known to the boxer world as Cardiomyopathy. The one thing that I am thankful for was my doctor honestly and concern of the matter by referring me to the best Cardiologist specialists at Ohio State University. The next step of this horrible situation will have to wait until Monday which is when our Cardiologist Apt. is. Now I can’t help but to assume the worst and it’s driving me crazy.

I never knew to what extent or how serious heart disease was in boxers until I got home and started researching it, and that’s when it all hit me, and pretty hard. Ike was a gift that someone gave to me shortly after my father passed away this summer which is why he’s so special to me. He means the world to me and I’m not ready to let go of him just yet. This is why I’m asking anyone with insight or information to similar experience to please help me out. If it is BCM, what should I expect? Could it be something else? Will he cross the bridge on his own or will I most likely have to make the decision. Do there personality chance? Ect. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,
Jeff and Ike

Hey ya’ll

Its me again, to clarify my situation I thought it might be easier if simply stated the symptoms that Ike has been experiencing. This will probably make it easier for people to make suggestions if they have any insight or experience with the matter.

I would just like to note that Ike is on Laxis, and is scheduled for a doc. Apt. Monday. He means the world to me so if anyone has had any experience with the symptoms that Ike is showing I’d truly appreciate any advice or insight you had to offer. Once again, thank you for your concerns.

I wish I could answer your questions but we are fighting the cancer monster so I am not up on the heart condition. I know both heart and cancer are big health issues in our boxer babies....even though mine is 8. This ia a fantastic board so keep checking there will be lots of people who will be able to answer some of your question but we are sending postive vibes and love to Ike from Rocky & Mom

I am sorry to hear about Ike, I don't know much about BCM just from what I have read. I just want to let you know we hope everything turns out okay. Keep us posted on what the dr says.

I am so sorry to hear about your baby. My Linus died this past December 1st of Boxer Cardiomyopathy at the age of 3 1/2 (do a search for "linus" in the Rainbow Bridge forum for his story if you are interested). It all happened so fast with him....and no his personality didn't change.... his stump was wagging till the very end. It looked to me that he had had a stroke....and he too was drooling excessively. The situation you describe with Ike sounds all to familiar other than the fact that 3 days later I had no choice but to end his suffering and help him to the Bridge. There was no hope for Linus.. and nothing to "try" to help him get better. Your situation sounds more positve and hopefully the Cardiologist will have some good news and give Ike a good prognosis.

Came back and post an update when you can.

Sending lots of good vibes your way..........

Jeff,
Your story is all too familiar with me as well.
My Arley was diagnoised with BCM when he was only 8 months old too.
Like you I had no clue what to think or what was going to happen.
But to make a long story short, the best thing you can do is to see a cardio Dr and allow for testing to make sure that your baby will get the correct test's and meds. Arley is almost 4 yrs old now and we have had only a few fainting/seizure spells which can be common with the heart condition.
Because of the BCM though there is no guarantee. Once I came to grips with the disease, did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions, I know that I have done everything for him that I can possibly do, and one day I know that it will end and when it does I know that in my heart and mind that I did everything possible, that he is happy, safe, loved, well fed, etc and has a good life while here with me and that is the best he can ask for as well.
I still allow Arley to be a boxer and do almost anything he still wants but I keep a very close eye on him and when I think he needs to calm/settle down we cuddle on the couch to take our minds off of playing.
There will be more follow up appts you will need to have now just to continue to monitor his heart, I holter Arley about every 6 months to make sure his meds are still working properly for him.
Once you get over the shock of all this you will realize it wont be so bad, but you will just look at the situation differntly and will not take him for granted either.
I wish you & Ike the best of luck and keep me posted.

Jeff,

I don't have any experience with BCM, but I wanted to let you know I was sending positive thoughts your way--I am going through a somewhat similar situation with my 6 month old boxer girl...Gracie has a heart murmur that my vet is concerned is most likely Aortic Stenosis. (murmur was rated a 2 out of 6). She has an appointment at UC Davis Vet hospital on the 20th for a full cardiac workup. So I can completely understand your worry and fears. Gracie is the light of my life, it took my husband and I a year to decide we were ready to bring another boxer into our life after losing our first one to lymphoma, and now I am terrified of what the future holds for her.

All we can do is take it one day at a time and deal with the diagnoses once we know for sure (its soo hard not to play the "what if" game) and love them for all the time we have. I am determined to let Gracie be all the boxer she wants and be sure her life is a happy one. I wish you the best with Ike, please keep us posted, and know that everyone here at BW will be thinking positive thoughts for you both!

Jeff,

first and foremost: you are not alone. second of all: although the symptoms are terrifying, keep your cool.

Our 9 year old male Paws is going through the exact same thing. This afternoon we will be seeing the cardiologist.

Couple of things:

it may not be BCM, could also be atrial septal defect or aortic stenosis. very similar symptoms. either way, the presence of a murmur is fairly normal in most boxers and other deep chested dogs. they are graded 1 through 5, the latter being the worst. The good news in all this is that there seems to be a similar pattern in what triggers the attacks in Ike. The potential for proper management of the condition through lifestyle changes and meds are excellent.

Our Paws has had a diagnosed grade 2 murmur since the age of 5. chances are he had it before that. he was on meds for it for 2 years, but then was taken off. he has been fine for the past 2 years, until this past week, he had his second and third episode, one where I actually had to revive him.

You have to all in all look at it as having a child with a medical condition. It's precious and special. Would we all rather have the purrrfect dog with no problems? Sure, but the world doesn't turn that way as I am sure you know.

chin up my friend. your Ike sounds like a tough guy, he is young enough to battle on I'm sure. Savor every moment and walk!

I wanted to let you know that I am familiar with BCM. We just lost a young boxer to BCM. You should know that this condition is often overdiagnosed. There are many boxers that have been diagnosed with it and the doctor was wrong. There are many types of heart conditions in boxers and BCM is the worst and most lethal. If a dog truly has this condition it has a very limited time left. Our boy was of the best show lines in the country. He started to have the same fainting spells you describe. He went to the vet for a work up and they diagnosed him with BCM and gave him 6-8 weeks to live. He just passed away on Monday. He was 2 years and 10 months old. He was a wonderful pet and had a wonderful disposition and it was very hard to know that it was coming. Over the last weekend he was very disoriented and confused. He couldn't stand on his own. It was horrible, but he was a fighter, he was still the great and wonderful guy we had loved.
I hope your doctor is wrong, many other heart conditions are treatable I hope if you kid has anything it is something you an deal with that will allow him to lead a normal and fulfilling life. This is the reason that BW stresses health testing!!!!

Jeff,

I wanted to repost and let you know that I am sending even more positive vibes your way! I am not sure if you saw my post yesterday about Gracie's murmur and the fact that it has cleared! I really hope that maybe you too will get a better diagnosis for your baby! I realize how lucky I am (and Gracie too) and want to let you know that I will be thinking so much about you and Ike, please keep us posted!
