We adopted a boxer from the pound 1 wk ago this past Saturday and immediately took him straight to the vet. He had a formed stool at the vet but every since then he has had diarrhea. They dewormed him there and the diarrhea was expected but this is going on a little over a wk. He is on antibiotics for kennel cough (yes, I know it's a virus but I didn't want it to progress into anything worse). The vet gave him pro petalin to hopefully firm his stools...his stools aren't liquid anymore but definitely still diarrhea. Then the vet gave him metrinidazole....he got his first dose Friday and it doesn't seem to have helped any. Other than the diarrhea, he is eating and drinking fine and acting fine. Should I give the metrinidazole longer to work....it's been about 3 days. I just don't want him to get dehydrated.

hey, my dog is having similar problems, and is also on antibiotics and endosorb. the meds seemed to help, up until i started to introduce her new food. it could be due to a switch in food. are you feeding him the same food as the pound?if not, the change could be causing diarrhea.

It could be the stress of a changed enviroment. I know your house has got to be better than a pound, but it is still a change. Did you change food from what the pound was feeding? Between the change in living situation and all the meds, your pup has been thru a lot. Stay on the meds.

Another cause for diarrhea is over feeding or poor quality food. What are you feeding and how much? Look on the bag and see if you are the weight/age range for feeding your dog. If your are at the high end reduce buy 1/4-1/2 cup per feeding and see if that helps. Remember those charts are just guides and every dog is different. I have one dog that I have feed under the guidelines or he gains weight.

I would go out to a vitamin store and get psyllium and add it to his his food. Psyllium is just fiber and can help regulate your boy. I would start with 1/2 teaspoon and work upto a full teaspoon with each feeding. My boy had soft stools for months, once I started to add the psyllium he had firmer stools within 24 hrs.

Silly me....I Just happened to be looking at his metrinidazole bottle & I should have Been giving him 1 1/2 pills twice a day....I've only been giving him 1 pill twice a day. I don't know if that would make a big difference but I'm gonna give him the 1 1/2 & see if that helps. I feed him natures recipe, easy to digest. It's the same food I fed my other boxer, Reggie, b/c he had a sensitive stomach. I'm sure they weren't feeding him that at the pound. I've also been giving him chicken & rice with a little bit of yogurt in it to see if that helps. I'll give it a couple more days & if no improvement I'll try the psyllium. Thanks for your advice!
