same problem

I had the same problem with my boy. We got him from a shelter, and he was attacked at some point in his life by other dogs.

Our boy has a barking, lunging, aggression problem when he saw another dog. it was very uncontrollable.

Part of his problem was dog aggression, and the other part was dominance aggression.

I have been controlling the problem by letting him know that I am 100% in control of him at all times. Especially on the leash.

1st we started with making him lay down in the house, then on the leash while we were walking.

I make him sit then lay down while we are walking, at unpredictable times, to make sure that he knows who is in control.

And every time he sees another dog and goes into his shenanigans with the barking lay him down.

In the beginning use a muzzle when u see another dog for he may try to get you. My boy gave me a little nip without the muzzle on. When I first started this "tolerating other dogs" training.

A trainer told me that you will never train him to like other dogs, but you train him to LISTEN to you. And if he knows it is wrong to bark at and or lunge to GET the other dog he wont.

In short when u are approaching another dog
sit, muzzle, continue walking
If he lunges -- DOWN
Attempts to bark -- DOWN
If he doesnt do anything -- continue walking and take off the muzzle when the danger has passed.

Note: when he gets better, you can take the muzzle off, but it is for your protection.

Note you may have to force him down physically, the easiest way to do this is to push the section of the leash towards the ground with your right hand and use your weight.

Where the head goes the body will follow.

The point of this exercise is to teach him to respond to YOU instead of the other dogs. So when you get into situation with another dog, he will listen to you, and not try to get the other dog.

He may never like other dogs.. This is something you will have to accept, but he will learn to tolerate them.

I have been practicing this every day with my dog, and the results are amazing.

We can actually walk by another dog now with no shenanigans.

Maybe a little whining from him to get the other dog, but a stern NO!, and HEEL! He is back at my side.

Maybe in the future we will let him play with other dogs , when his attitude towards other dogs is good, but until then No dog park.

Our boy did have a few scuffles in the dog park before we started this training, and even bit a chow, nothing serious, but still a bite.

SO good luck! This is something that is relatively difficult, because the breed is rather stubborn.
