Hello!
I have been reading the posts on this board for little while now and decided it was time to introduce myself. My name is Sarah and I am from New Hampshire. My reason for now writing is this: My husband and I have been researching the boxer breed for 8 months now, and have decided that this is the breed of dog we want to have in our family. However with a baby due in 9 weeks (out 1st) we have decided to not get a puppy until next summer. Here is my question: do we get a female or a male? I ask as I have two cats and I am worried about a female boxer showing Alpha aggression towards other animals. Has this ever happened to anyone? I know they can show aggression to other females (dogs) in a house, but to cats too? My husband prefers a female, and I honestly am not partial to one or the other.
Any advise anyone?
Thank you!
NH Sarah

I don't have any skin children 3 cats, 3 dogs, but I feel if you bring the boxer in as a puppy it won't matter what gender because the kittys are already established. Just make sure the kittys have a safe place to come and go as they please until everything is normal. This can take a while until they get used to each other. IMO baby gates set up about 3-5 inches from the ground or where the kittys can jump them is good, because the kittys don't feel as threatened...

Welcome and congrats on the baby! I wouldn't say that we are partial to females but because Bailey does not get along with males we had to get another female when we wanted another boxer. We have 1 cat who is older and although she does not get along with the dogs they pretty much leave eachother alone. Good luck and congrats again!!

Gender question

Thank you all for the replies thus far! I am feeling a bit better now. I just wasn't sure if maybe one sex would be better than another, but I think I'll et my husband pick a cute little girl, if that is what he want! I must be nuts though: having a skin baby and a getting a boxer baby! I look forward to it though!

Thanks again everyone!

My girls do fine with kitties, and I don't even have any of my own. Make yourself the alpha, then you'll have less trouble. Congrats on the baby and the boxer baby to come!! :D

I think you'll be fine either way -- most puppies raised with cats will get along just fine. You will have your hands full with a baby and a puppy, but they will grow up to be best of friends!

Girls Rule!

Olive is much better with our cat, Mini, then Moe is. Mini was here before either of the dogs and they both came home as puppies. Mini always runs away from Moe but she will play with Olive. Olive is much more gentle when playing with Mini. Also, my husband has a special bond with his Daddy's girl. I'd say go with a female if that is what your husband wants.

I only have one boxer (female), but she gets along with both my other dogs (male and female). My brother has one male boxer and a female as well. Bucho ( male) is very curious about the cats and will just lay there and stare for hours, but Holly is very territorial and will park anytime they come within a few feet of her. Bucho came into the house as a puppy and has always understood his place in the chain of animal command. Holly on the other hand was a rescue and so that may be why she is more territorial. I really think that as long as you socialize both the puppy and the cats and provide each their own space you will be fine with either gender. Congrats on the baby and keep us posted!

Hello and Welcome to Boxerworld.

I would say that either gender would be fine for being around kids. It would be a matter of preference for you. Perhaps, with raising a toddler, you would not want the headaches that come with a bitch in heat, so maybe a male would suit you better? Just a thought.
