I recently adopted a beautiful two-year-old from Boxer Rescue LA. He appears to be black with the usual white markings and has the personality and behavior of a boxer. I read that a totally black boxer is a genetic impossibility but the boxer rescue people said they do exist. I cannot find any stripes to indicate a reverse brindle. I wonder what cross would produce this color if he is a mix. Whatever the case, he is a wonderful dog, but I am curious.Any ideas out there?

Any cross with a dog who carries the gene for solid black. I would guess Lab crosses are common, simply because Labs are so common, Great Dane is a possibility with a very similar coat. And it could be that one of the dog's parents or ancestors is a cross, if they were black too - black is dominant in most breeds.

I have also seen a website where a person breeds black boxers. They are black and have white chests... I believe they may have been bred with an american bulldog at one time....
