Our male boxer has started chewing on our kitchen walls, the first time was about 2 months ago, he actually chewed through the wallpaper and almost all the way through the drywall..So we took all the wallpaper off of course and patched the hole..we caught him in the act and told him bad boy..that seemed to work up until a week ago he has chewed on the wall twice in two different spots...we have caught him both times and punished him for it and we give him his chew toys and praise him for chewing on them..we have never had a dog chew on a wall before or even heard of one chewing on a wall..any idea why he is doing this and what we should do next..?? We do not leave him out to roam the house when we are not home because we are afraid we won't have any walls when we return.

Most dogs chew because they are bored. Make sure you have alot of toys and rawhides. When you catch him chewing the walls tell him no then give him something he can chew on. Also if you bring him to a dog park that will help him get mental stimulation and it will wear him out. I hope that helps you in some way.

I feel your pain, we have 2 boxers, our female has started to bite throught the drywall and we have tried everything from bitter apple to tobasco. We have tons of toys and rawhides laying around but for some reason she loves the taste of drywall. Our male does not have this bad habit. We do not crate our dogs while we are at work 10-11 hrs per day so we confine them in the dining area. We are up to 7 holes in our downstairs, I gave up on trying to patch them since she just goes and eats it. So now all I do is find things around the house to block the holes. It has been 2 weeks and no new holes.

You don't by any chance have pests in the walls (i.e. insects or rodents) that you don't know about, that they can hear? Just a thought.

I can help

Well.....what worked WONDERS for us was a product called McNasty's. I am not 100% sure it will work inside the house though. It's a product for horses that keeps them from "cribbing" or chewing on the corral. Siren chews on wood - bigtime, and when she started on the siding on the house....that's when I couldn't take it anymore. It's HORRIBLE smelling and tasting...I hate to admit I've tasted it - but I was unfortunately standing downwind. I was even so mean as to take it and spray it on a piece of cheese - Siren's FAVORITE....and she wouldn't go near it...even a day later. I'm not sure I'd want to spray it all over my walls - but if u do it in one spot the dog likes, and the dog associates the wall with tasting bad....it might work.

If anyone is interested and can't find it - let me know and I can get it for you.

Chewing on wall

I am pretty sure we have no insects in the walls..I think he gets bored but we do have plenty of toys for them to play with..hes actually a very bad chewer, we can't give him rope toys or tennis balls because he eats them so we have kongs and other very hardy toys for all the dogs to play with and he does chew on them alot but I guess maybe he gets bored with the toys and decides the wall looks good to eat...we don't leave him out to chew the wall when we are gone but we have to watch him and no where he is at all times when he is out or the wall would be gone by now. And we have tried the applebitter but that does not work,it did with the cabinets but not the walls..Thanks for all the advice,it helps that we aren't the only ones...Hes just now turning one on March 12th so maybe he will grow out of it,hopefully.

Our female boxer does the same thing, but only if we lock them in the basement to dry off after being out in the rain or snow. She just does not like being shut away from everyone even though the other two dogs are with her. We just don't lock her down there anymore. Unless absolutely necessary

My mom's male boxer chewed on the wallpaper/walls, and we had a boston terrier that destroyed several baseboards by chewing on them. What worked for us was to take some regular flavored Listerine and put it in a spray bottle and spray it on the baseboards/walls that they were chewing on. It seemed to work. Hope it helps.

I feel your worry. Ive been ther. When Bust was about 8 months he began to chew our wall and skirting board. The damage was bad and I was gutted.
On a positive side he only did it in one place, and when I covered this wall up with a large dresser the problem went.
I found out that that wall had some damp inside and there was a salty residue on the wall which may have been the catalyst.
On the other hand he may have done it any. He was only young and had been left alone.
Some times I may find a door frame with a little nibble, if weve been out all day...Note to myself, "must buy some new toys soon."
