A friend of mine contacted me this morning about ...you know a friend of a friend.... who has a litter of purebred boxer puppies and has one that they believe is deaf. They are looking to give the puppy to someone who can care for it since they believe it's a special needs baby. I am trying desperately to find out all the details, color (I would assume possibly white) and what sex the baby is. I know it's 3 weeks old now and they are well aware that I would only try to help find a forever home for the puppy at 8-10 weeks old at the earliest.

If you know of anyone in the Richmond Virginia area who can adopt this little baby, please let me know. I hope to have all the particulars by the end of the week if possible.

I found out more information today. Apparently the breeder is well known in the dog show arena in PA and when the littler of pups made their first trip to the vet, the breeder wanted the small white male euthanised. The vet asked to try and find a home for him so the breeder agreed to turn the pup over to her when he was weaned to find a new home.

What? I didn't know people were still doing that! That's just awful. Thank God the vet didn't do it.

I grew up in the Richmond area, now I'm up near DC; however, I still spend a lot of time in Richmond because my parents live there.

I'd love to help in any way that I can. I personally can't take this puppy right now - although it's killing me because I want to so badly!

I've started talking around to people I know that may have an interest and would be a responsible person to take this puppy who needs a home.

I'd like to talk to the vet who's seen the puppies so I might have more information to pass on to those I've been talking to about potentially taking this puppy. Are you allowed to post the name of the vet? Or do we have to figure out an alternative way to communicate?

From what I've learned, the boxer puppy is actually in Pocono PA and I can arrange to get it wherever it needs to go, to a GOOD home. My brother lives in PA and I can do a road trip if needed. I assume the vet is in PA also. I have the name and number of the lady who is the breeder and plan to call her this weekend to get more details, including how the puppy was tested for deafness.

Any help would be extremely welcome in trying to find this little guy a home.
I wish I could take him but my house is over run with boxers and other critters too.

Have you considered contacting a rescue to help place this puppy into an approved home? Our rescue just received two deaf white boxers from a breeder in Maryland - a 9 week old who was recently placed into a home and a 10 month old who is still with me as a foster (and may stay with me permanently!) We take in owner surrenders from the Pennsylvania area and I know we have several approved homes with deaf dog experience that had applied for the 9 week old that was just placed.

I have checked around but there aren't any good breed rescues in Richmond that I've been able to find. I have worked with deaf dogs before and I may just end up keeping this one and training as a therapy dog. If not, I found an approved home that is in NC for a special needs dog. I'm meeting with them this coming weekend.

Thanks so much everyone for all your support.

How are you making out with finding a home for the puppy?

We just moved to Midlothian a couple of months ago! We would definitely consider adding a family member if it were a good fit. We don't have any experience with deafness but I'm an avid trainer and would certainly be willing to learn how to work with him. We have talked about getting another boxer for a while but had been holding off because of the move.
