Hi!

I hope I'm posting this to the right board :) If not, I apologize.

We're planning on getting a boxer puppy in a few months (I am currently researching breeders in the area), and plan to add a German Shepherd puppy a couple of months later (so they grow up together and have playmates). The GSD will be a german working-line dog (I've narrowed down to 3-4 breeders I'm interested in).

We're thinking of getting a male Boxer (he grew up with one) and a female GSD (I had four while growing up). Obviously both will be spayed/neutered (definitely don't want any accidents... eek!).

Has anyone had experience with raising these two breeds together? Is the sex mix good or should we get two males? Also, would it be a good idea to get them very close in age or should we wait a while before getting the second dog?

My husband is a Boxer fan and I'm a GSD fan, and it was our way of compromising LOL :) we plan to train both dogs in Schutzhund (if we can find a local club that will train the boxer... it's been a challenge; if not, we'll probably go into agility and obedience).

Any comments/advice would be great. Thanks! :)

Boxers are generally very sociable and get on with most breeds, I have never known any of mine object to playing with a certain type. I think it will be fine, it is lovely to watch pups grow up together, I have two 7 month (siblings) and one 11 month old boxers. The male/female combination is the most compatible. Good luck and don't forget to post some pics when you have your pups! :)

Not sure if this counts but my older male is a boxer and my female is a boxer/sheppard mix.
They get along so well. I really couldn't ask for better playmates. They are both so subbmissive and non-aggressive with eachother.
My baby, Adrian (boxer) is the boss, believe it or not.
There are only a few months between Rocky and Layla and everything is going great.
I think they are both great breeds and so far, they seem to mix very well.

that's the same situation we were in a few months ago. DH grew up with boxers and i with GSD's. Naturally when we started talking about getting a puppy he wanted a boxer pup and i wanted a german shepherd pup. We went to my german shepherd breeded first and found out they had a 6-9 month waiting list. So, we got a boxer, Roxy instead.

Now, my dad has 2 german shepherds, Caine & Kovax. You've been raised with german shepherds i'm sure you know this but, GSD need a very dominant leader or they will become very dominant themselves. Boxers are also a very dominant breed without a firm leader.
Caine & Kovax are both very dominant with other males, any breed. But with females they are a peach. It can be any breed, as long as it is a female they are okay.

So our Roxy is obviously a girl and she gets along with them great.

If I were going to have a Boxer and a GSD i would get female boxer male GSD.
But this is just my experience, it may be different with them growing up together.
Good luck, Both are great breeds!

I agree with everyone else. My in-laws brought home a 6 month old Sheppie after their 13 year old sheppie passed in June. Bradlee and Lucy - are now girl friends. Bradlee (boxer) is about 15 months and Lucy (GSD) is 8/9 months. They play for hours on ends. I think one female/ one male is a good decision. They are the ideal match typically and I would say get them both close together.
I do have to say my in-laws used our puppy wisdom to get them through the rough spots. It might be easier making sure one is fairly well trained before bringing home the second. Good Luck!!

i agree with everyone else. if you do decide get a male and female.

brutus is male and my db brought over a male gsd. lets just say things didn't go well. brutus was so excited to see my brother he jumped and kidney beaned in his legs. the gsd became very protective of his owner. brutus and the gsd didn't get into a fight, but we knew if we left them alone that probably would of happened.

to be honest i didn't know that male boxers were dominant leaders. now i am starting to wonder if he is okay with other male dogs. we have had another problem with another male dog a mastiff, ironically the dogs we have had problems with happened to be my brothers.

Thanks for your advice, guys.

I am very well aware of the dominance issues with both breeds (esp. the GSD). I really want a female because they tend to have less of an alpha drive... though I also am going to be careful to screen the parents for temperament, which is why I am doing a lot of research.

I mainly want to make sure that the breeds are compatible... I wouldn't want to pair two dogs who can't play together because one will break, you know what I mean? :)

My inlaws female sheppie is SOOOO dominant. But still sweet. Some of that is puppy energy too. I would suggest the boxer first and then the GSD. Our Brads taught Lucy (GSD) how to box. It is neat to watch. Except my inlaws blame us for why Lucy can't play (too rough) with other dogs ;)
