Both off their food

They seem fine and are playing, but usually they both are chomping at the bit.....to get their breakfast, and chow down, last few days they leave the food in the bowls. Yesterday they eventually ate it hours later. But why are they both not as interested in food?

A couple of times (over a week ago Sammy girl threw up a little yellow stuff), and once two weeks ago someone had puked breakfast and had bad diarhea all over the house which was unusual. But since then, they were eating fine, and no more sick stuff. Just no interest in breakfast last few days...

How long before I should take them to the vet. Tuesday is first day regular vet is back open....shall I watch them till then, or be worried and go to emergency vet? I know it doesn't sound like an emergency, but if you saw how eager they were to have their breakfast, you would realize how wierd it is to see full bowls just sitting over there.

It is warm here, but house has AC.... I forget what regular dog temp vs sick temp is, I will take it if someone will remind me.

the yellow stuff that one of your dogs threw up is bile from a empty stomach. boxers don't do well on a empty stomach.

it sounds like you might give them to much time to eat. and they are starting to become finiky. maybe you should try to leave the food down for 15 min. and then pick it up. and see if they eat at the next meal.sometimes IMO when you free feed they become finiky.

what kind of kibble are you feeding?

as far as the as the vet I would just keep an eye on them and see what happens.

I think the averege temp of a dog is 101-102. but I am not positive.

Ah, bile, that makes sense. They get fed 2 cups of Nutra balance lamb and rice, each, for breakfast and dinner. We don't free feed. They have always loved this and if you sleep in they bang on the bedroom doors to ask for breakfast. Can't imagine they BOTH became finicky this quickly...

Help I am getting worried.......Anything else obvious that puts dogs off their food? Anyone know a medical site you can plug in dog symptoms like they have for humans, and get ideas???

If they don't eat a thing and stop drinking water, you should definitely take them to the vet (Isis contracted Leptospirosis last year and the first sign was that she stopped eating, then drinking). Likely, they may just be being a bit finicky so give it a couple of days unless anything else happens.

A vet visit may not be a bad idea. Things that could put both dogs off their food simultaneously could be heat, something they've ingested or contracted that's making them feel unwell, or it could be the food itself. Any chance that this bag of food has spoiled?

Hmmmmm, I hadn't thought of a bag of food spoiling... How does that happen to dry food, and what makes them sick about it? I understand it may be stale, which would maybe account for them not eating it, but diahrea too?

I took a fecal sample in, and began them on rice and chicken broth, (as the vet suggested). They are eating up the rice quickly. Will bring them in Monday (first opening) if not better.

Dry food can go stale, it can develop mould, it contains ingredients that can go bad... the thing that generally stops is spoiling is not the fact that it is dry, but that it contains preservatives. If it has exceeded it's use by date, or if it has been improperly stored at any time, then yes, it can certainly go off.

If they are fine on the chicken/rice, but revert to not wishing to eat or vomitting once you put them back on their dry food, personally I'd be inclined to buy a different bag and see whether that makes a difference If it does, then the place for the existing bag is in the trash, I'm afraid.

Owen is eating like a champ, but has had two or three barfys in the last two or three weeks. I thought it was an empty stomach thing, so I started giving him a biscuit after I get home, but today he threw that up....

I sure hope you have better luck than I have! If he keeps this up, he'll be back to the vet, along with the cat that spent half of last weekend barfing all over the house!
