can anyone recommend a good book about dog nutrition? i'm very interested in reading up about a more natural diet supplemented with vitamins, minerals, etc. i really need a book that will help me figure out the percentage of nutrients my dog requires. the internet provides me with all the information i need to know about certain supplements, but never how much to give. i am becoming more and more interested in a holistic approach to raising my dog. any suggestions on good books that aren't written by any joe shmoe who wants to make a buck but perhaps a licensed vet or someone who knows what they are talking about, perhaps through experience. i've found so much info online through various sites, but every diff. site i read tends to contradict the next and it's beginning to drive me CRAZY! i remember catching a title on a post, but can't find it! i think it was dog's nutrition and health for dummies. does that sound familiar to anyone?

thanks in advance! sorry so long...i tend to ramble...

Super Boxer
Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets: the Healthful Alternative by Donald R. Strombeck
and
Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats by Richard H. Pitcairn, Susan Hubble Pitcairn

Strombeck feeds cooked while Pitcairn feeds raw but both are very good about overall health and nutrition.

I'm not sure if you are more interested in BARF, if so there are different books more geared towards that.

thank you for the suggestions! i will check those books out. as far as BARF goes, it is actually the first thing i checked out online and was very interested...still am, but i know i cannot to the BARF without abeing extremely knowledgeable about what i am feeding. the next diet i looked into was the natural diet. i liked that a lot too, so right now is just my research stage to figure out what to do!!! thanks again for the book ideas. i'll look through them as soon as i can get to a bookstore!

If you want some barf book recommendations, these three are good (and written by pro-raw feeding vets):
Dr Ian Billinghurst's "Give Your Dog A Bone" and "Grow your Pup With Bones"; and Dr Tom Lonsdale's "Raw Meaty Bones Promote Health".

You could also check out the BARF forum, and the book forum, for more ideas.
