We switched to Blue Buffalo not long after we got our 2 boxer pups. One was started on Purina Puppy Chow and the other on Diamond. We needed to get them both on the same food and wanted something quality so we made the switch to Blue. I had heard good things and read the ingredients and I still think it's high quality and good food, but I don't think it's agreeing with my Ozzy.

Since switching he hasn't consistently had a solid poop. It's always been sort of squishy and a pain to clean up when there are accidents. Millie seems to do just fine on it, although they both tend to eat around the "life source bites" or they end up all over my house.

I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a better food to try. One of my friends had suggested Flint River Ranch...it's what she feeds her Berner.

I had the exact same problem with my 3 month old pup, Ginger. She ate Purina Puppy Chow at the breeders but I wanted to put her on something better. She was skinny and her coat was a little dull. I tried Blue Buffalo and had the same results with it that you had. She never got over the diarrhea! I had to use pumpkin in her food to finish the bag, but she wasn't thrilled about eating it. I did a double take on the BB website and noticed that the large breed puppy had more protein and less fiber than the plain puppy formula. That was probably my problem, but I didn't trust that my picky eater will eat the normal puppy formula. I've heard alot about Wellness and had them send a sample. She gobbled it up! So today I'm going to try her on the Wellness Puppy Super 5 Mix and see how she does. It has the same amount of protein but more fiber so I'm hoping that will help. I'll let you know how that works out for Ginger. Good luck!

Oh please do let me know how it goes. We are also using the Large Breed Puppy formula (I don't know if I mentioned that before). I don't have any problems with our girl. She eats the BB pretty well and for the most part has solid poo, it's just our boy who has the problem. I asked the vet and she said to give a probiotice since we had it left over from Millie's first infection. It didn't really make much of a difference.

Now it's just a matter of picking the right food to try...

I am checking out the reviews on the dog food analysis website as suggested by Laurel. Maybe I should be looking for a higher fiber content? I don't want to skimp too much on protein levels. Are there good sources of fiber vs. not so good sources of fiber and any other tips for picking the right food? I don't think a raw/home-cooked diet is really an option. I barely cook for myself...heh.

Bah! Time for plan B. Wellness dog food is not available anywhere in my town! Of course that would be the best I've found for Ginger....
I'm off to Petsmart to look for something similar and I'll report back on that. Wish me luck!

HI. I got my T-Bone on BB large breed puppy right now also. Ive noticed soft poops. He will not eat it just kibble, i have to mix a can of wet with it then he gobbles it right up. He has also had some goop around his eyes since he has been on it also. He may be allergic to something in it. I use chicken and venision canned he loves it just soft poops.

We've got goop around the eyes too. We had some prior to using BB but since it may have gotten worse, I wasn't paying such close attention.

I know there are allergy tests for humans....do they have the same for dogs where you can figure out food allergies? When I was learning about human food allergies I found out they can cause all sort of problems besides the most common and logical ones, such as ADHD and just a distaste for some foods. I wonder if it's the same for dogs.

Still researching for a good brand and still taking suggestions and tips! Thanks!

I feed my two Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. Back when Roxie was having problems with allergies and loosing hair, I posted a few threads and Chicken Soup was recommended. She has done very well (has been on it for about 3 years) and our 4 month old does great on the puppy formula. It is a 4 or 5 star food. I know it is not a 6 star food but it is better quality than most and I can get it for 30 dollars for a 40 lb. bag from a feed store. Cant beat that and the dogs love it!

Is a feed store the only place to buy it?
