bloody face

Our 2 boys met about a week ago and since then it has been one big playground which is great except that Tucker's (1yr) face is all torn up by Titus' teeth (11 weeks). What I can't figure out is why Tucker won't make Tucker stop. It is too the point now that Tucker has open bloody cuts on both sides of his face from where Titus has grabbed hold and shook when they are playing. Tucker has always been very laid back, never growling or barking and doesn't yelp or anything even now...and keeps coming back for more, usually starting the play!

It is so hard to watch him have his face ripped apart. We tell Titus no bite when he grabs his face and often times separate them even though they are playing but we have to stop him because Tucker won't...Tucker loves the playing.

I know the rough playing is normal and that doesn't bother me, it is the blood and cuts around his face. Should we be stopping them like we are? We are also cleaning his cuts nightly and using ontiment at night so he does have scars all over...
The one plus is Titus doesn't bite on our shoes, fingers or toes anymore...he bites on Tucker.

Does this sound normal? Any ideas on how to clean up his face?

After about 4 weeks I can report that Cashs face is healing up quite nicely! He still doesn't show any desire to put Zuko in his place, but Zuko may have mellowed a little. We do seperate them if I see a miserable Boxer with a Beagle hanging from his jowels, but for the most part they are just feeling each other out.

As far as cleaning his face, I was using neosporin, but Cash rubbed it off on the carpet, bed, and couch. So Every night and morning while our demon child was still in his kennel, I would take a warm washcloth and clean Cassius off.

Thanks for the link. I think we will try the time out in the crate and show Tucker lots of attention. The only thing is Tucker loves playing with Titus so even while he is quickly becoming a bloody pulp he is the one who usually starts it- he is pretty much still a puppy himself.

I like the idea of everyone going to their own time out space but am not exactly sure how to teach it.

Have you seen much results?

I had the same problem! Our friends got an american bulldog when Cassius was about 9 months old and he used beat the crap out of cash, I couldn't figure out why he would let Sam(american bulldof) hang off his jowels and scratch him. My theory is that Cassius knew he was a puppy because now Sam is bigger than Cash and he doesn't get away with anything. Good luck and they should slow doen eventually. Cassius had so many scratches that I was afraid to take him to his vet appt. because I didn't want them to think we fought him, luckily Sam goes to the same vet and they know that they are just playing!

Your poor Tucker!! Bless his little sweet gently spirit!! I have been complaining about the rough play here as we just added our second...but i think i am going to be grateful and shut up as we have no bloodshed here...lots of barking though!!
Tucker sounds like the perfect dog....just beat up for now!!

Apparently it isn't that uncommon that a puppy may shred the flesh of an older, bigger family member. It seems that the neck and lips are the favorite targets of puppies.

Those needle like puppy teeth can tenderize skin in a hurry. We were cautioned to keep an eye on Ava to make sure she didn't turn Indy's neck to hamburg.

Indy would let out a pitiful wail whenever Ava clamped down on him, and would stand still until she released her grip. Indy didn't hesitate to let her know that she was hurting him, but he never turned on her.

I'd keep an eye on them when they are playing, and separate them by taking Tucker away for a few minutes. Go where Titus can't follow, and he should catch on quickly that serious biting ends his fun.

Fortunately, they don't have those needle teeth for long.

And thank heavens for that - I remember feeling like a human pin cushion :p

The 'puppy licence' will also run out soon, and then he will have to start watching his P's and Q's around Tucker I am always amazed at how much an older dog will put up with while a pup is running around with a licence to be totally obnoxious :rolleyes:
