My poor baby. Whenever we go on long walks in the woods behind my house, his poo gets progressively softer; sometimes it turns watery and the urge to go is ever increasing. He doesn't do this anytime other than these long walks. On Saturday, instead of being watery, it was blood and mucous. We ran him to the vet who put him on a bland diet of chicken and rice for 3 days with Flagyl for a week. He seems to feel fine, just a bit lathargic and this diet is so digestable that he's only gone poo once in 3 days - it was pretty normal, just very dark.

He has had bad diarhea before (exactly a year ago this weekend) but never bloody. The vet said it's probably "colitis" but he doesn't know what is causing it. I'm sure that he'll recover this time but I'm worried about long-term affects, does anyone know about the long-term dangers of this disease, is it curable? Should we stop walking him along that path (could it be triggered by exercise?)?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I noticed that my puppy (around age 9 weeks) had a mucous/blood diarreah. I took a sample in and it was Coccidia -common in puppies and cured w/ a round of antibiotics. Don't know if it could be that?

Maybe JulieM will see your post and respond. Good luck :)

My boxer has Colitis and it is aggravated by long walks and excessive activity. The diagnosis of colitis is made only after other tests have been performed, blood panel, fecal test etc., to rule out parasites, infections etc. My boxer, Ripley was diagnosed with Ulcerative colitis only after all the above tests were performed and only after he had a colonoscopy performed. He is on a special diet of Hills Z/D Ultra which has been a miracle food for him. We tried home cooked meals, many many medications and this ffod has prooved to be the answer to our prayers. He stilll has bouts of runny, diarhea and he will never be cured, but he is alive, which is a miricle itself :) good Luck with your baby!!

My 8 month old boxer has Hystiocytic colitis. If this is what yours has, hold on and get ready for a ride. I have spent thousands, cleaned up thousands of messes(the sense of urgency to go to the bathroom is incredible), and I still love her. It is a dreadful disease and just hope that your boxer doesn't have it. As of right now, there is no cure for it. It is a life long disease that makes them anemic, lathargic, etc. There is medicine, but only to slow everything down, not cure it. I hope you don't have to deal with this problem because it is very frustrating. Good luck.
