Blood in Stool

I am getting a little scared becuase Daisy has had blood in her stool. We took her to the vet about two weeks ago and they checked and said that they didn't see anything to be worried about, give her some more fiber (pumpkin) in her diet and keep an eye out. Well until today, everything seemed normal again. Then this morning, she had one normal stool when we got up and then an hour or so later, she was whining to go outside and she had what looked like a blood clot at then end. Shen then walked a few steps and went to poop again and nothing but bood came out. Luckily our vet is open for a couple of hours on Sunday afternoons, so I will be taking here there today. I am just curious if anyone else has experience this and what may be causing it. Thanks in advance for any information.

Did the vet check her for worms?

Yes, they checked her stool and didn't see anything that could be causing the problem.

Riley had 2 bouts of bloody diarrhea - both times the vet said that it was due to a GI irritation. They gave her flagyl to control the diarrhea - it is an anti-spasmodic drug so it stops the colon from spasming and it also has anti-biotics in it to clear up any infection. They also told me to put her on a bland diet for a few days so that the colon didn't have to work so hard to process the food. I tried giving Riley rice and hamburger meat that I fixed at home, but it didn't really clear up the diarrhea quickly. I went back to the vet after a few days and picked up some cans of ID. That did the trick - after one day her stools were back to normal. I would recommend the ID if your vet suggests a bland diet - Riley loved it and worked better than the homecooking I tried.

Dekan is going through the same thing right now...

Dekan had the same problem this morning....I am taking him to the vet tomorrow....let us know what happens! sending healing vibes!

Well our vet thinks it is Giardia. Daisy had the vaccine but the vet still thinks that is what is causing the blood in her stool. They took a stool sample and sent it out for further testing to be sure. In the mean time, Daisy is on antibiotics which should clear it up. I'll be keeping a close eye on her. The good news is, if the Giardia test comes back positive, the vaccine company will reimburse me for her treatment since that means that the vaccine failed.

We called the vet this morning and they said we should bring him in tomorrow....they didn't seem to worried....and the blood has lessened so that is good....we will find out what the vet says tomorrow.....I hope that Daisy feels better soon and has an answer to why she feels lousy to begin with! Good luck! I know how scarey it can be...
