earlier this year, when Zeus was at the vet they asked if we would be willing to sign him up for blood donation. They explained that Boxers are 1 breed of a few that have widely acceptable blood among other breeds. We talked about the risks (virtually none) and benefits (huge) and we signed him up. so far this year he has been called upon twice, and both times was a life/death situation for the other dog.
They don't store canine blood like they do for people - if they have a 'situation', they call and if you can bring the dog in, they take the blood right when its needed.
If you can believe this - they tell me that he is an excellent donor - just sits there and lets them put the needle in, very calm - sometimes they need to seduce the dogs, but so far Zeus has been great.
They also treat him very well and after the 2nd time they got him a new collar with BLOOD DONOR embroidered on it. Very nice touch.
I encourage anyone to sign up their Boxer as a blood donor - he/she probably won't mind and you can feel good knowing it might save another dog's life.
