We have always taken steps to lower the risk of bloat in our boxer. Last night bloat hit our Bassett hound! About 10 minutes after we noticed the two dogs went outside we heard the Bassett yelping. Went outside and found him in very bad shape and knew exactly (thanks to this site) what was wrong and had him in surgery within 45 min.
His stomach is now stapled so it won't happen again and is recovering with no signs of damage to his bowels. It's scary how fast and without warning this can happen!
Again thanks to this site for the education, we cannot emphasize enough the need to: know where your emergency vet clinic is....drive it first, know the warning signs of bloat, even though you take the steps of lowering the risks, you haven't prevented it!
