Bleeding

Thumper got her nail caught in a grate last night and panicked, and her toe started to bleed at the nail bed. I immediately cleaned her up and put some antiseptic spray on it. She seems unfazed by it and is still doing her boxer burns around the yard, etc. This morning I found a few drops of dried blood on her bedding and am wondering if I should wait a day or two before bringing her to the vet. Her nail is still intact (not split). Any input would be appreciated - I'm such a nervous nellie when it comes to my dogs ~ Cathy

I would just keep it clean and keep a close eye on it. If it doesn't seem to be healing, in a few days, a trip to the vet might be in order.

Tyson did this not long after I first got him. Scared the crap out of me when I came out of the shower and found him in his crate w/ a bloody paw! He had actually ripped off part of the nail and split it. I brought him to the vet and all they did was clean it and cut off the part of the nail that was hanging there and told me to just watch it. I agree w/ Jan. Watch it for a couple days and see how it goes.

Update

After she bled intermittently all morning, I ended up bringing her to the vet this afternoon, and he removed the whole nail. She is now resting comfortably on the couch, but hates the plastic collar she has to wear for a couple of days. Thanks a million for responding to my inquiry ~ Cathy
