Does anyone here know the legality behind having a beware of dog sign posted?

THANKS

I'd be interested in knowing this, too. I wanted to get one for my door when I had Bailey as a joke, but my mom warned me against it. She told me I have a great liability in owning a dog and having a beware of dog sign would only increase such a liability. I took her advice and I don't have one, but I'm very interested in seeing what people have to say.

Randy and Daisy. That is funny I have a plaque next to my door that is very pretty and it says in all caps GO AWAY! I've had a few kids take it seriously and leave! Very funny.

IMO it is best if you own a house and have a backyard that is fenced in to put a sign on the gate. to me it is a safty issue. so if anyone does come in the gate they would know that you own a dog. I always like to make sure that people and children know this just so they are not surprised. beware of dog seems so mean and scarry so my sign has a picture of 2 boxers on it and it says

we can reach this fence in 2.8 sec
can you

now like I said this is just one persons opinion.
but it works for me.

we have a Beware of Dog sign because i have heard of lawsuits happening if a person adult or child comes into your house/backyard and you dont have one posted, and god forbid the pups bite someone.

for example, my parents neighbor had an issue like that, comed guy went into the backyard(sign wasnt completely in view) and their lab bit him. he tried sueing till the local authorities came and photographed the sing stating it was posted he should have looked.

I don't know of the legality issues either, but I always think it's a good idea to alert people that there is a dog on the premises. I have one on my front door (some salespeople/workmen have a fear of dogs, in my experience and they like to be forwarned )and one on my back gate which have a cartoon picture of a boxer with boxing gloves and read;"Watch out...boxer about!" :)

I think my mother's point was this: if your dog were to get out of your yard and bite someone, the victim could say that you obviously knew your dog might become viscious because the sign says "Beware" instead of merely... "Dog(s) on premises." For safety reasons, if I do get one, I want one that says the latter to avoid anyone trying to say that I have a potentially aggressive or dangerous dog. There is nothing threatening or misleading about simply notifying people that there are dogs on the premises.

yes that is what I mean. my signs are not like beware of dog.
mine have a little humor in them.:)
I just want people to know just in case they don't like dogs.
we all know that boxers are nothing but clowns.

Putting up a "Beware of Dog" sign, could arguably be an indication that a dog's owners knew he was a problem. And Keeping a dog who is known to be vicious is a far more serious issue than having one who has never been a problem before.

So you are better off with the friendly fun warning signs that don't suggest the dog is in any way aggressive.
