Best collar for all day wear?

When I walk Nala I use a 1" wide nylon collar but when I leave it on her all day she gets a bald area under her neck. And she will scratch at it a lot. Maybe she is mildly allergic to nylon? Leather doesn't seem to bother her skin as much but it bothers her because it doesn't give. Her skin gets all bunched up and you can see that it is uncomfortable for her. She has access to the fenced-in backyard while I'm at work via a dog door and I hate to leave her collar-less just in case she were to get loose one day.

What kind of collar do you leave on your Boxer all day?

We have had lots of problems with Vegas and allergies. The collar is a major factor. He is on anti-histamines now and his neck is much better, but without them his neck gets very raw. I have tried every collar imagineable.

We found a thin leather collar had alot of give in it, it was only about a 1/2-3/4 inch thick and made of very soft leather. Although it still made his neck raw. So we then tried a show collar (nylon choker type), it is loose around his neck and easier to handle him when walking. It still gives him a raw so I am not sure if it the nylon or just having somthing on his neck. This is what we currently use. Someone we know has boxers and has had the same problem and the only thing that made it go away was chain, but i don't really want to put a chain on him.

We hope that his allergies are seasonal. We have yet to have a major frost in Toronto so we will see soon. Vegas gets so itchy and scratches to the point of making it more raw. I have tried Vit. E, calamine lotion when its was really itchy as well as tee tree oil but all of these just seem to give short term relief. I find frequent baths with a oatmeal shampoo help alot. I try to leave the collar off as much as possible but its hard when you live in the city.

None. I know too many dogs who have choked to death because their collars (even non-chokes) got caught on something when no one was around.

If you feel you absolutely must have a collar on the dog (a microchip or tattoo will provide identification without a choking risk), opt for a Break-Away collar that will come off if the dog gets caught on something.

I agree with JulieM. None of my dogs where collars except when we are going out. I too have heard of way too many horror stories. My guys are all micro-chipped.

Same here...the only time my boys have a collar on is for walks. They are also both microchipped...

Nala is micro-chipped too. So I guess I'll just stop worrying about it and let her go collar-less! No complaints from her on that one!

Yes, leave her naked. It is the safest thing. Markus and Tara only wear their collars when going out.

My Lukas is microchipped too and he wears collar only when whe are going out. Have your vet to put microchip on her; it is simple, painless, safe and not expensive.

Ping has a leather collar with spikes - it's his "bad boy look" , he has it on inside sometimes but most of the time he's just "naked".. i dont know how he'd feel about being microchipped!

A microchip is exactly that - a chip containing identification information for your pet. That information can be read by a scanner - which most shelters and vet offices have. So if your dog ever goes missing, it can be scanned and identified (and the owners contacted). Basically it serves the same purpose as a tatoo or ID tag - except that it isn't removable A microchip would also prove ownership in the case of theft

Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice, and are inserted via a (rather large) needle directly under the skin, usually at the back of the neck between the shoulder blades. Takes only a second, and is relatively painless for the dog.
