benadryl for itching?

Is it o.k. to give a dog Benadryl for a red, hot, itchy rash? It's not fleas and cortazone doesnt work. It's all over my Chiuahuah and he is going crazy from the itching.

I give it to my dogs for rashes from grass and insect bites all the time. Works pretty well. One tab for every 50 lbs of dog.

Benedryl works wonders for Porter in the Spring and early Summer. He gets bug bites quite a bit where we live but I think he is also allergic to grass!!! Poor guy! He also tends to get quite pink and itchy under his chin between his jowels and benedryl hits the spot for that too. Dan's suggestion on dosage is what I use as well. Hope your pup gets better!!! What'd the vet say or is it not bad enough to take him? Hope it goes away soon, poor little guy!!

is this the same as the cough syrup? given orally? applied on the skin?

Why do you say ignorance?? I don't know the answer either. Are you talking about liquid benedryl for itchies and that stuff or real cough syrup. I didn't think dogs coughed. LOL I'd imagine the dosages would be the same. Check the mg of the tablet and then check the liquid and see what it says. I'm sorry I'm not more help on it. Hopefully one of the moderators or vets will answer!! Good Luck!!

Oh the benedryl cream works great too. Just lightly cover the area like you would on yourself and it should be good. Problem with that stuff is that you have to watch b/c they'll lick it right off. If it worked the same when they lick it as it does on the skin they'd be ok! LOL

If you use liquid benedryl, mix it in with some yogurt and they should lick it all up just fine...

If you use benedryl tablets, you can coat it with peanut butter, stand behind the dog with your legs straddling their sides, use your clean hand to open up their mouths, then put in the pill/PB into the back of their throats quickly, close up the mouth and stroke their throats until it's swallowed...

We do this all the time, with our flee pills and any other medications...

Not cough medicine. Benedryl for ALLERGIES!!!

Buy the pills as I find they are easier to give to the dog (less messy). I just open my dogs' mouths and stick in in the back of their throats and then blow into their noses (gently) which makes them swallow. In no time the hives and itches are gone.

Thanks, I'll check on this matter further. Seems like what Bruce also needs. Everytime he takes a bath, his skin gets all bumpy and itchy (hives?). tried different kinds of mild dog shampoo already, all the same results... we're back to using regular dog shampoo (Sargeant), bumps and itchies still there, but seems to subside faster .... 1-2 days.

Thanks to all for the great advice! The vet never seems very concerned by the itching but he did advise of the Benedryl. I had not herd of this, that is why I asked. I will try it today and see what happens. Again, Thanks!

I give benadryl to my puppy. 25mg tablet twice a day when needed.
