Bell Training

we have a 7 month old male. still likes to leak pee and poo in the house. sometimes he is great others he just looks at you adn goes. he knows he is wrong because he pins his ears and runs to the door. can some one tell me about the bell or any other suggestions.

Hi Mike and Chase!

Welcome to BW--I bell trained Layla at 10 weeks old and she literally "got it" in less than 24 hours! Boxers are very smart. Just hang some jingle bells(ours were from x-mas) on the backdoor doorknob and everytime you take him out have him sit and ask "Do you have to go out?" or you can use your own "potty phrase" and then ring the bell with his paw. Be very consistent and he should get it. You should also do a search here and type in "bell training" to get info on how other members have used this training method--that's how I learned about it. It is such a great method as it helps take the guess work out of it for you. Just remember to praise, praise, praise everytime!!

I`ve also bell trained my little boy, and he`s doing great!

What I did was; I went to a petstore and bought a bird bell. I hung the bell by the door, and every time I took him out (after he had slept, eaten, played..ect) I made him ring the bell. I didn`t open the door until he rang it, but when he did he got a lot of praise. Then when he did his business outside, he got lots of praise and treats!! You have to make him feel like he`s done the greatest thing ever!!:D

The first couple of days you can put something tasty on the bell (f.ex. peanutt butter), to make it a little more interesting!

I have to disagree. All Chase knows is that you are mad at him. By yelling at him, all that is going to happen is that he is going to learn to go to the bathroom when you are not looking. :( If you catch him in the act, a loud ackkk will hopefully stop him in his tracks and then you can scoup him up and carry him outside to finish his business. Remember to praise like crazy and food rewards will really help too. If you don't catch him in the act, you can kick yourself for not watch him carefully and then just clean it up. It is preferable for him not to see you do this as you don't want it to be an attention getting exercise on his part.

An excellent book, wilh a good section on housetraining is "The Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson.

Bell training can work really well. It is certainly worth a try.

Harley was Bell trained at 17 weeks, it took him 48 hours to catch on (he is now 5 months). I am just hoping he does not regress

Visitors to the house hear the bell ringing, and when we tell them that it is just Harley wanting to go potty outside, they are totally gobsmacked amd amazed. :eek:

Layla's mom states what we basically did with Harley. I searched this site a lot for the information and advice.

Just remember lots of praise and patience, they will catch on. The next thing you will hear the bell ringing and you are then on the road to success.
