Sam is 8 weeks old and is doing ok on potty training....a few accidents. I have done the search on bell training here and it really doesn't tell me how to get him to let me know....ring the bell. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. You guys sure do know alot on here.

You must show him what you want and keep repeating it.
Everytime you go outside, take his NOSE and ring the bell, give your command word (outside potty - or whatever you want to use), open the door, and go outside.

At first, when he learns to ring the bell, he will ring it all the time for a play toy. You MUST open the door every time he rings the bell though. LOL After a few days of *playing* constantly with the bell, he will stop playing with it.

Mine were taught to ring the bell with their noses, as I didn't want them using their paws. Make sure the bell is hanging low enough for your puppy to reach with his nose. You can raise the bell as your puppy grows.

Good luck with your puppy!!

Hang the bell beside the door, so that everytime the door is opened for something besides going potty, the bell doesn't ring. Be sure to hang the bell at the right height for him to hit it with his nose - if you teach him to hit it with his paw you may end up with scratches on your wall. Every time you take him out to go potty, just ring the bell, or make him ring it, praise for ringing it, and go potty, and after he potties, praise praise praise, and treats:) Eventually he'll learn that ringing bell = going potty = praise & treat. Good luck!!

I also forgot to mention, when you are first training them to ring the bell, only hang a bell on the door you use for them to go outside for their potty breaks.

I used a bell to housetrain my first puppy, Drew, and what a miracle it is...

Now I'm just in the process of trying to teach my new puppy, Tula, but she's not so swift on the uptake! ;) She "gets" everything else from sits, downs, tricks, etc. but she just can't get a handle on the bell!

Oh well...in time it will come!
