So I have decided after the advice of all of y'all that I am going to bell train Ace. I have a couple questions, first what type of bell or bells and where do I need to hand them? Do I hang them by the door? If I hang them on the door everytime the door opens they'll ring...will he get confused? Do I give him a treat after he goes to the bathroom outside? I guess really I need to know all the details. I really want this to be successful! Thanks for the advice!

Any sort of bell will do, as long as you'll hear it. It doesn't even need to be a bell - a set of keys on a string would do the trick. The point is that it needs to be something that YOU will hear, identify and respond to. What noise, if any, it makes is utterly irrelevant to the dog ;)

What he needs to learn is that hitting this item (bell or otherwise) with his paw or nose has the effect of producing you to open the door. That's all. It doesn't matter if it rings itself at other times. It's not him that may be confused by it, but you - since you're the one responding to the noise.

Does that make sense to you? YOU respond to the noise of the bell. HE learns that hitting the dangling thing makes you open the door.

Interesting! I am going to try this. Most of the time we know when Luke wants to go out. He's on a schedule for his walks. He goes 4x a day. As soon as it gets close to the time he normally goes, he comes and gets us. But the bell training sounds cool. I'm gonna try that too!

We are also interested in starting to bell train. My concern is, both dogs have free run of our house during the day ( bedrooms closed so the only accidents happen on the lino) If we start bell training will we be undoing all the training when they are left inside when we are at work? Until Memphis is desexed and chipped they cant use the doggy door option. Is bell training not a good option for us?
P.s Jon does get home during the day to let them out just so no-one thinks we are bad parents!!!
