unfortunately, i do take him out every time he rings the bell. usually if he wants to play, it's becuase there is something outside that he wants to see again (ex. branch, other dog), if he doesn't go to the bathroom within 10 minutes, i take him inside.
that way, he'll know that he can't manipulate us! also, what has worked for us is whehn he has to go to the bathroom, we make sure that he doesn't play. he knows that he's on a mission. we set aside other play time for him.

PrinceOscar--I bell-trained Tae at 20 months. I don't think it's ever too late!
I decide to bell -train her b/c I was having difficulty gettting her to tell me when she had to go out. I am not her original owner and did not do the early potty training. She caught on within 4 days, but the funny thing is now that she is bell-trained, she does not always use it. Sometimes she comes to get me or sits in front of the door. She never did this prior to bell training. I guess the act of bell-training triggered something. I can't complain. I do love it when she rings the bell, though. It's so cute!

I'd never heard of bell training before, so I was really interested in trying it... I got a jingle bell cluster at the store and have been ringing it before I open the door and keep ringing it until they go outside. (I've got two boxers, Sadie is 3, my foster Megan is 7). Sadie has always gone outside when the door is opened, no problem. Megan took coaxing, but now as soon as we ring the bell, she goes outside... Question is, now that they are starting to learn that the bells mean they'll be going outside, do I have to physically make them ring the bells to get them to ring on their own? Or will they know that ringing the bells will get us to open the door? The bells are hanging off the countertop by the door so they can reach.
Also, we've always been using the glass door to let them out and that's where the bells are. But now that it's starting to rain we are going to use the garage door so they don't get wet going outside (we have a carport next to the garage). Do I need bells at either door? Please help. I want to make as much sense of this as possible to make sure I do it effectively.
