Hi,

are there special dog bells that hang loose from a bracket that can be bought for dog training? Or do people just make up a contraption with a bell of any sort?

I'm talking about the bell that you could put by the outside door that she'd ring when she wants to go outside to the toilet?

I'd like to get a bell so that I can start training.

Regards,

Alan.

You don't need anything specially made for the purpose - any bell will do, or in fact, anything the dog can swipe with it's paw or nose that will make a noise you'll hear :)

Some people use christmas bells. But any sort of bell or jangly thing tied on a string and hanging down around nose-level near the door will do the trick perfectly well - it just needs to be something that you will hear and identify when the dog rings it ;)

I recently went running all over town trying to find a bell for training. All that I could come up with is little cat toys, they are plastic balls with tiny bells inside. I tied a couple together and hung it from the doorknob. Deuce has done a really good job with it the last couple of days. I haven't really worked with him just yet, I've only showed him a couple of times and it seems that he's already got the hang of it! appicon

Our bell is a big oversized jingle bell that was a Christmas tree ornament last year. We just looped a ribbon through it and tied it to the doorknob. Like Debbie said, just about anything that makes noise will work. Just be sure that it's not going to be too tempting to chew on!

Bells of many different types can be found at your local craft store. I have a bunch of small jinglebells on a string and it works good. When he will use it! Now if I could just find a cow bell.....Hmmmm, maybe it's time to go back to the feed store.

I have a large christmas bell that I have hanging from a banana holder. It saves the wood, walls, etc. I have it positioned in such a way that Joey can ring it if he is in his crate or out.

I also have about 4 or 5 medium size jingle bells tied together and hung from fishing line. A single strand broke pretty quick so I tripled it up and it's held up for about a year now. Bell training was probably the best training I've ever done. Sometimes it's alittle difficult to get them to figure out that they don't just mean I want to go out, but to go out to potty!

Bell training rocks, man. :)

I strung two cow bells on a ribbon and hung them from a peg board at the back door. The ruckus they make! OY! I'm sure to hear them from every room in the house, which I guess is a good thing.

It was really easy to train Mabel to ring the bells when she needs (or wants) to go outside. Smartest thing I ever did. Well, that and teaching her to stop knocking small children over. ;)
