Charlie's dad

Boxer Pal
I have just had Charlie, he is a six week old white Boxer.
When I put him in his caged room at night, even though he is asleep, when he wakes he howls and yelps very loudly. He is left with teddy bears, toys etc. but they don't work. The only thing that quietens him is if I go downstairs and talk to him,but this is making me veerryy tired!!! Does anyone have any suggestions all contributions gratefully appreciated.

Suggestion No. 1. Put a crate next to your bed and when the pup wakes up and cries, simply put your hand down so he can smell that you are in the room with him. DO NOT SPEAK TO THE DOG or coddle him in any way. Just let him smell you and then ignore him. He will go back to sleep.

No. 2. If you can't put the crate next to your bed, then keep it where it is and IGNORE the dog's crying and whining (unless it is time to go out to the bathroom). Do not go down and coddle the dog or speak to him at all. Ignore him and eventually he will get the message and stop whining and barking and go back to sleep. If you continue to coddle the dog, he will continue to bark and howl and not sleep.

Also do a search here at Boxerworld using the search button and search words such as "crate training" and you will find TONS of information on this. Also check out the articles at http://www.boxerworld.com/puppy/

Good luck.

My suggestion in tape record your voice and have it repeat over and over. My boxer, Apollo doesn't really yelp but will snore VERY loudly which will keep me up. He only starts to wine and yelp at about 7 am which is kind of my alarm. :o
