Any suggestions on how to stop a dog from begging????

Butch is contstantly not eating his food but begging in the kitchen. If I'm cooking or anything he just sniffs around and whines. This morning my daughter got up from the table to get a drink and he stood up on the table and was licking her bagel. I told him "Off" in a deep voice and he listened but I don't want him snatching food. There have been times when my kids have been holding their food and when they look the other way he gets a lick in. Of course, we always tell him no and ignore him for this behavior. He doesn't like dog food which drives me nuts. I have to spruce up his kibble or he won't eat it. We never give him table food but still he tries.

My house is very open. It's almost impossible to keep him out. The slider doors are there, his crate, his food and water are in the kitchen and it adjoins my family room. I don't see it happening.

Lola has tried this on so we started shutting her in another room while we were eating. We let her back in now though as she ignores us now.
When Dh or the kids are eating in the lounge she begs and when they get cross with her I tell them to go sit at the dining table then.

I was eating chicken last night in the living room. (I know, My son and I were watching Stuart Little and having dinner in the living room) Precious kept rolling over at my feet wanting a nibble. But I just laughed because she did it I know 10 times in a row and gave her a doggie treat.

I just make Zoey go lay down on her bed. If she gets back up, I take her to her bed and make her lay down again and tell her to stay. But her bed is always in plain sight (open house) and when I see her starting to get up again I just have to say Ahh and she lays back down.

This is what we did with Norton as well--you just have to be consistent and always follow thru. He eventually learned to go lay down while we were eating. You can also crate her while you are cooking/eating dinner so that she will leave you alone if necessary. Just remember--always be consistent--if you are giving her treats or nibbles as you are preparing dinner, of course she is going to learn that if she hangs around mom in the kitchen she will get to sample the menu! its easy to forget and slip her a bite without thinking while you are cooking--I know, I've been guilty of doing it and always realize too late that I just reinforced a behavior that I want to discourage!

spray bottle

Our family room and kitchen area are open to each other. But the kitchen and table area are tile and the family room is carpet. What I did is take a spray bottle to the table with me. When Baylee started to come on the tile while we are eating I would tell her no, if she proceeded to come in, I would spray her. This is still on going, but I've only been doing this for a few days, and I have had to tell her no, less and less. Now, she will sit at the edge of the carpet and watch us. You may want to try this....

Good Luck,

We always sit at the table when eating, the boys don't walk about eating stuff, another thing is I feed Ruby at the same time as we eat, around 6pm. I don't mind her just sitting there but if she whines or actually gets her paws on the table I tell her 'In your bed' and most times she will stay there. Her bed is in the kitchen so she isn't sent to another room :)

Learned some things

Emma is terrible about begging I had to "hound" my wife to stop giving her treats while she was eating but she still begs. I will start using a squirt bottle after I buy a new one she chewed the last one up and I know exactly why she chewed it. Emma's Pop
