BEE allergies

Whew! I had a rough week, yesterday, Basil was diagnosed with demodectic mange and monday she got stung by a bee.

Little did I know the little bee sting would be a horrible experience. SHES ALLERGIC! here is a picture on our way home from the vet:

SO SAD! But when it happened I gave her a Benadryl, and she still kept swelling, so I was SCARED (look at her face!) and rushed her to the vet. He gave her a steroid shot and some meds (i forget what they are called but its stronger form of benadryl) - now, if this were to happen again, can i jsut give her one of the meds the vet gave me (i didnt use them all) and she will be okay? or are allergies to bee stings really bad, and ill have to take her to the vet EVERY time? im just worried bc she loves to be outside, and i am planning on camping with her next summer...

Chancey is very allergic to bee stings too. Ask your vet if an epipen is advised to bring along on the camping trips.

This happened to Spike just a couple of months ago. He did the exact same thing - continued to keep swelling after I gave him the benadryl. I didn't notice it when it happened, he stepped on what we believe was a dead hornet, he ate breakfast and then came in the bedroom and laid down. Usually after he eats he is burning around the house. I was ironing my clothes and looked down at him and he was swollen up - chops and all. I finished getting ready and had my son sit on the bed and pet him so he wouldn't be scared (his eyes were swollen shut). I was waiting outside when the vet opened up. The gave him the same 2 shots and sent home steroids for the following few days. It was a horrible experience and I was so scared, the vet said just to keep some benadryl handy and give it to him asap. She said he didn't need to come into the vet unless he was showing signs of shock or having trouble breathing. She said it is a very common allergy for dogs. I took a few pictures for DH to see they are in my gallary if you want to check them out.

Our nosy little boy got into a nest, without us realizing it, and was stung multiple times on the face and neck. He came inside the house and sat on his bed. When I pulled out dinner and he didn't come running, we just knew something wasn't right. My husband picked Max up in his arms and the dog lost consciousness! He came to in a matter of seconds, but it seemed like forever, of course. We rushed him to a local late-night ER and was told he had an allergic reaction to bee stings. It took nearly 15 minutes for the swelling to start, but once it did - whoa, he must have really bothered those bees! There were so many bee stings on his muzzle!

The vet recommended obtaining an epipen from our regular vet. Max was injected with a high dose of benedryl and I think steriods. We were told administering over-the-counter Benedryl isn't enough because it takes too long to get into the bloodstream (it's not fast-acting enough). So it's either use the epipen if available or get to a vet ASAP. Good luck. That picture of Basil said a thousand words - poor pooch!

Our white boxer was allergic too, and we didn't know what made him all welt up the first time then I saw a bee sting him, and he nearly passed out, you honestly could see him go white in the gums, and he layed down.
Our new boxer, we saw him get stung and all he got was a little lump where he got stung and that was it, no all over body swelling, so I am keeping my fingers crossed he will not be allergic.
They just seem to be such sensitive dogs.

Poor sweet Basil..Basil has a shar-pe look going on in the face with that swelling..hope she's feeling better soon.

Poor little Basil! She did kinda look like a Sharpei! Rowdy is highly allergic to bee stings - he collapsed on the floor, went into anaphylactic shock within 2 minutes of being stung. You can say I am super paranoid now and I have loads of benedryl on hand. I asked my vet about an epipen and they did not recommend one. I also got a 2nd and 3rd opinion from a few other vets and they didn't recommend it either. So I am a little confused on that note. My vet said to just give the benedryl and rush him in if it happens again. Not to scare you, but my vet also mentioned that the reactions are more severe the 2nd or 3rd time than the initial reaction. I hope miss Basil is feeling better.

Leila was stung by a bee in late August and we didn't even know it until she fell over and passed out, went into anaphylatic shock and we almost lost her. She was treated and had to stay over night for observation. We were told that the select few that have this reaction initially WILL get worse with each subsequent sting, therefore Benadryl is not enough and can't get into the bloodstream fast enough. We were supplied with an Epipen and must use it immediately AND still get her to the Vet ER if she ever gets stung again.

We love to camp too and so the Epipen goes with us every time.
