bedtime issues

At night, when I am headed to bed, I have a bit of an issue of settling my 3.5 month old puppy down. He just wants to run, play, and jump around the room. Wondering if this is just him being his age or is there something I can do to help him calm down?

Was typical for us.

The standard first question is how much exercise does he get during the day. As you probably know, boxers need quite a bit before they get tired.

Even with plenty of exercise and obviously tired, both of ours would often do a final crazed boxer burn before settling in at night. It was almost like kids resisting the need to go to bed. Sometimes it seemed the more tired they were, the more crazed the burn was.

We crate trained, so after they did a boxer burn it wasn't an issue. At 3 1/2 months they would still be going to bed in a crate in our bedroom.

I work to wear out our 3 month old girl between dinner and bedtime.

She has no more than three or four hours a time in the crate during the day with a walk at 10:30, backyard time after lunch at 1, and then supervised play at 3:30. We do a long walk, throw the ball around, chase in the backyard with the kids, wrestle, etc. after dinner at 6 in advance of the kids going to bed. Once the kids are in bed, about 2 hours before our bed time, no games. She is usually exhausted by this point and just wants to sleep at our feet. If not, she gets quiet time in her downstairs crate while we read or watch tv. She goes to bed in her crate in our room when we do.

Once the kids are in bed she seems to know that it is time to chill. We have just tried to do what we did with our kids which is to try and stay on a consistent schedule, so perhaps she knows that we want her to calm down when the kids are done for the day.

I will say that we have had some more difficult nights, and those have usually been when she has had less stimulation or excersise. A good game of throwing the ball, and/or a session chewing on a bully or marrow bone have helped her chill.

Good luck!

Lol, Raleigh did that too, would run around like a crazy man then suddenly stop and go to sleep.

It should pass, try to wear him out:)
