Beau is vomiting

Hi,

I am waiting for the vet to open so I can call and I thought I'd ask around here in the meantime.

Beau is vomiting this morning. He went outside when I got up and wouldn't come back in. I told him to "Come" and he reluctantly came in - and started vomiting white foamy stuff in the house. I let him back out, where he started eating a lot of grass. He stayed out a while, and came back in, but won't even look at his food. He is very sorry for himself. I am boiling some chicken and rice at the moment. Any advice will be welcome.

P.S. yes he is up to date on his vaccinations. He just had his yearly round of them about a week ago.

Well, something has obviously upset his tummy (very obviously LOL). But it's not necessarily a problem any worse than that.

Is there anything unusual that he's had to eat in the last 24 hours, or anything at all he could have gotten into?

Unless anything takes a turn for the worse there, then it's probably best to simply keep an eye on him. I wouldn't expect him to be willing to eat for several hours yet (maybe this evening). And when he does, a nice bland meal like the chicken/rice you're currently making is the best choice. That will give his tummy a chance to settle down and any irritation to be repaired.

Well, he did chew a red crayon that one of the kids left out. We found evidence of it in his stool when we were cleaning the yard. Other than that, I don't think he's had anything except for Canidae to eat.

I was searching forums and found a post that said white foamy vomit was parvo and that really scared me! I'm glad you don't think it's anything to worry about.

When a dogs tum is upset they will often eat grass to relieve themselves of the stomach contents....the grass tends to help the vomit. I know whenever one of my dogs do eat grass the vomit usually has white foamy saliva with it. I agree with GMacLeod,just watch Beau and give him something bland when his appetite returns. I wouldn't worry unless Beau starts acting very lethargic or vomits more.

how much foam?

My Otto had a bout of something sounding like this too a while back. Turned out he'd been sampling some hand made soaps from the bathroom counter!! So, he had LOTS of very white foam for hours but finally up came the chunk that was causing it.
If your pup ate a crayon, he's probably been seeking smells in the house--maybe your/family smells to console himself. Crayons generally do no more harm than give your garden rainbow colored poops!
Good Luck and let him lay low for now, but try to keep him off the grass diet.

He's still vomiting...

Hi,

Beau ate some rice and boiled chicken for dinner, then we went out for a few hours. When we came home, we let him out. He must have eaten some grass because he came back in and vomited the whole dinner up, still intact and undigested, along with some grass. I hate to do it, but I have to crate him for the night because I don't want him getting sick all over the house in the night. Is it possible I fed him too much? I gave him a cup and a half of rice and half a piece of chicken cut up.

Has Beau had any exposure to other dogs lately? Griffey had kennel cough as a pup, and he kept coughing up white foam...my uncle (a vet) said it was a normal symptom. The fact that I paid for a kennel cough vac wasn't much consolation. :(

Well, it sounds as though his tummy is still upset. On a positive note, he was at least feeling well enough to eat, but clearly not well enough to keep it down. If he's no better in the morning, then it's probably time to let a vet take a look. Most tummy upsets don't last more than a day.

Yes jnickles8, Beau has been exposed to other dogs, and is on a regular basis. We belong to a dog training club and Beau is currently in obedience level 3. We have not noticed any dogs that seem under the weather. All the dogs in obedience 3 belong to members and we are familiar with them. Beau has had his kennel cough vaccine this year.

Thanks gmacleod. DH is distressed about "his" dog. On a positive note, Beau is still active, wanting to play with his sister Jasmine. I am off to the store to buy some more chicken to boil. What do you think about me feeding him a small amount of rice and chicken every hour instead of feeding him a bigger portion twice a day? Would that ease the digestion process? Should I mix yogurt in as well?
