Hi Everyone,

Does your boxer bark and if so when do they start barking. Baxer is 5 months and I have yet to hear him bark. Is this unusual or will barking come with age?

Thanks

I think it just depends on the dog... My Alize is the barker in my brood, and can actually drive me a bit batty b/c sometimes she just won't quit. Roxi will bark if she hears something or someone when she's out back. My boy Diesel tho? Only ever makes a sound when he's either playing, or trying to entice the girls to play with him. Even then it's not really a bark, more of a howl-bark. I tell him he's gettin mouthy when he does that. LOL

First let me say that your baby is ADORABLE!!! What a cutie pie!

Secondly, I agree that it depends on the dog. Buster is not a big barker and I am so thankful to that. He will bark with us or growl with us when we're playing or will growl in playing with other dogs, but overall not a barker. He has growled when a neighbor stepped into our drive way when he was outside with me...so I know he would be protective. And...when he does bark (when playing) it is loud and very viscious sounding.

RoxDiezAlize - I see that you're also from Cincinnati. I am too (actually in Lebanon...north of Cincinnati). A couple others from the board are also. We should arrange a boxer party day! :)

Tyson has never been much of a barker. He is now 1 and just within the last month or two has he started. But he only barks when he feels there is something not right. He does bark while playing, but that is different :)
The other nite around 2 he came up to the bedroom whining like crazy. He wanted out something bad. BF got up with him, and there were 2 cars in front of the house with people in it. Tyson knew this was not normal, and started barking like crazy. And it was his deep mean bark. I was so proud of him.

That is awesome! What a good boy Tyson was!

Ms. Ali was trained to bark by our mini poodle who barks at EVERYTHING!! The worse time is when someone comes to the door. I'm working on getting Bailey our poodle to stop and I know that's not an easy task. But I'm convinced she would not bark very much if not for his non stop yapping.

my dog jersey whos 10 weeks barks a lot to "talk".. shes very vocal its cool with me most of the time cuz its one of 2 calm funny barks and i consider that normal for a goofy boxer but sometimes she gets really excited and just barks at me constantly to play and she gets out of hand. But she does listen when i finally get fed up and yell a QUIET! hehe its funny actually because she'll let out a soft whine and come sit at my feet and just wait for me to be happy with her or just go lie down and eat a bone.

Yes, indeed, what a good boy! appicon

As I mentioned in another thread, my Atlas is naturally very quiet. We heard him "play bark" when he was maybe 3 or 4 months old, but then pretty much fell silent bark-wise until he was a little over a year old. Now he gives one or two deep warning barks if he thinks someone's at the door who shouldn't be, and he'll bark at the dog park at dogs who he thinks are behaving inappropriately. That's pretty much it, and both occasions are pretty infrequent. Because of his quietness, I'm having an interesting time trying to teach him the "speak" command--he'll just look at me funny and sometimes yawn...NOT the results I was seeking.

Wow, that is great! :)

I hope Layla becomes that intuitive. She's barked since we've had her at 3 months, she's 5 months now. She barks when she hears me or dh coming home opening the door, playing or barking at her own reflection  (from the stove and fireplace). However, she's relatively quiet otherwise.

I have a two year old boxer that barks at everything, she sounds mean but wouldnt hurt a flea. Dixie on the other hand is three months old and VERY dominant! haha:D.. She's crazy and will bark at everything until she gets attention or trys to attack it..Its so funny! She thinks Marley is her's.
