If you take her out while she is barking, she is going to think that it is acceptable to bark in the crate and that it means you will let her out. If you decide to let her out you need to do it when she is quiet in the crate. Wish I had more helpful information but I'm sure someone else here will give you a little more information to help you make a decision.

I have a really big question to ask.. Actually it's not a big question, mroe a question - that's a big deal to me.

My boxer puppy sleeps inside with me, in the morning's we play and she goes out in the back yard (plenty of shade and cover.) I go to work for awhile then come home for lunch - spend an hour with my puppy - go back to work. If my boss is reading this, I meant to say - I go home for lunch, spend a half hour with my puppy, then go back to work. After that, I'm home around 4-5pm. You mention crating your dog for up to 3 hours?

My question is; can you leave a dog unattended in a crate? When I get my puppy spayed - I'm not going to want her to be around my roomates Rot for at least a few days. If I can't spend that time with her (don't worry - I plan on being there) but if I can't - is it okay to leave her in her crate; returning home every three hours to let her out?

I am going to give you our scenerio when we were crating in hopes that it helps answer your question. I do have a wicked headache tonight, so if I am misunderstanding what you are asking, I'm sorry, just let me know and I'll try to help out.

My husband and I both worked from 8am to 5pm when Megan was younger. We put her in the crate when we left for work at 7:30am. I got home at 11am for lunch and took her out, my husband came home at noon just as I was heading back to work. When he left for work at 1pm Megan went back into the crate until someone got home about 5:30pm. This worked well because she was safe in the crate and not destroying our house in the process. I think you will find that most people crate for that reason. So if you are looking to find out if it is ok to leave your puppy in the crate while no one is home, there is no better place to leave her.

We left our Hailey girl in her crate during the day for the first 3 weeks we had her. (this would have been ages 8wks-11wks.) We had family members go over and take her out for about an hour mid-day so that she could potty, but more importantly so that she wasn't extremely lonely.
We decided to stop crating her during the day at 11 weeks because she HATED it. During the hours no one was there (usually about 3 hours at a time) she yelped the ENTIRE time. This was reported to us by our neighbors. Plus when we would take her out of her crate she would whimper for about 10 minutes as though she were traumatized!
We since have puppy proofed the back-yard (which has many trees for shade) and purchased a very nice dog "igloo" and we now keep her there during the time no one is home. Believe me, Hailey is a much happier baby because of it.

i think that crating is a very necessary concept for any dog to understand, especially boxers. they have a lot of energy, and if not stimulated enough, they will get into trouble. don't give up on crating, even if your dog seems to hate it. i would bet that winston was one of the worst cases in history of trying to crate train. every time i'd put him in there for more than 30 mins, he would poop all over the place. it took him several weeks to get used to it. obviously, they would much rather be out running around, but i can think of many situations that a crate is absolutely essential. do a search on this site using the words "crate train"...you will get tons of helpful tips. and yes, as long as your puppy can wait to go potty for 3 hours, there is no problem with crating for that period of time.
please don't give up on crate training.
