I live on the upper west side in NYC, and really wanted to start on the barf diet for my 2 pups. Can anyone point out any places to buy chicken necks/backs? Are there any places that sell good veggie mixes too? Someone recommended www.aplaceforpaws.com, but its always good to have a store that you can just walk up and buy. Thanks in advance!

you can always go to the grocery store for rmbs chickin wings, backs and necks. you can not get the green tripe from grocers though. but if you are in a pinch you can always get some meat like ground turkey, chop meat, pork, lamb, chicken legs. you might pay a little more but if you ever run out you can go to the grocers. I order my meat from the grocery store in 40lb cases the price I pay for backs and necks is 49 cents a pound where I live there really are not butcher stores here in so fl. but maybe in nyc there would be and the cost might be cheaper.
as far as the veggie glop goes just type in feeding in the search forum you might find some recipes there for veggie glop.
here is a site to help with your questions

not much luck so far

Thanks for the suggestions, although I've called about 5 grocery stores and 5 butchers, and they all sound like they think I'm nuts. I found chicken necks finally at Fairway on Broadway and 74th, but they only had 1 lb! I came back the next day, and found turkey necks, but they were $1.50/lb, seemed a bit expensive from what I've been reading.

I joined the carnivore feed supplier group, and even though I didn't find anything already posted, I put up a new post and hopefully will come up with some answers.

Thanks again for getting me started. The pups like what I've given them so far.

Website

Thanks for the "a place for paws website!". It looks like the resources quoted most for BARF are much cheaper than what I've found elsewhere - sometimes as much as $40. Good information. Thanks!

found something

Well its been a while, thought I'd follow up. I joined the group suggested above, and not too much was working out. Finally someone mentioned Fairway. I went there and found backs for $0.49/lb. The first time I went, I was confused cause I didn't really know what to look for and they were called "Chicken bones for soup." But they are backs, occasionally you get some necks and wings in there too. Not the best price that I've heard, but they are Murray's (no antibiotic free-range) and in my opinion its reasonable for a good quality, reliable supply in on the upper west side. They also sell turkey necks, and all other types of raw meaty bones, a bit pricier, but good for variety. Located at 74th and Broadway. No luck with butchers, but I've kind of given up since I've found Fairway. Hope this helps.

It sounds like you found a good supplier. I think the price you get on backs is a good price, especially for NYC. I get necks for $0.55/lb from a butcher. If I order from our local Safeway, I can get backs for $0.69/lb. If I am lucky, I find wings on sale for $0.99/lb and stock up because Lacy likes wings the best.
