If the government really wants to make an impact on the current dog population, then they need to start at the top. Just like you target the drug dealers to keep the drugs of the streets - crack down on the bad breeders to keep potentially dangerous dogs from falling into the wrong hands. They can start with making it illegal to sell dogs in stores. Duh - there's a no brainer! They could also make kennels obtain permits to breed and impose fines on anyone caught breeding animals without the proper permits. There are a host of measures that could be implemented if the proper officials would take the time to understand the problem and fix it instead of trying to put a band-aid on it!

When I posted before about them banning the Rott's, Pitt's & Doberman's in my county I had a question to ask and forgot to. They, being county council, require you to double chain your dog on chain that meets certain requirements while within your 6 foot tall fenced in backyard, would this not make this animal more mean/vicious? It seems to me that it would. I am by no means an animal expert just a person owned by a boxer! My 12 lb Boston Terror, Cookie is horrible if I have to put her on a leash & hold her while my husband walks Rascal & IT is just a leash. I couldn't imagine a chain!

Yes!!! Many dogs naturally become more "aggressive" when they are restrained because they feel vulnerable and unable to protect themselves should they feel threatened.

Another idiot with a law!

Pit Bulls are banned in Ontario unless you have a "legal Pit Bull" I am not sure what that means dh said that the have to be altered and they have to be muzzled if out on a lead. When this decision was made the Toronto Humane Society had hundreds of pit bulls and american staffordshire terriers for adoption.

Alex C. I had heard about Denver and that is why I was freaking when I posted. I think Wanda has a good challenge for us all and I, for one, will make sure that I stay on top on what is going on. It really is unfair what that some of the banning is based on the breed and not the practices of the human being's involved.

While I can respect your thoughts on this, unfortunately these steps will penalize the responsible breeders. Many good breeders are operating at little to no profit already. Instituting mandatory government permits will penalize the honest and will have no effect on "bootleg"/back yard breeders.
