Grrr, breed banning really bothers me! I agree with Punchinella.

Just out of curiosity, if a town puts a dog breed ban into effect does the owner of a banned dog have to give the dog up or move out of town? or do they allow the dog to stay and just enforced new dog ownership?

I'm not positive but I believe they are required to be muzzled whenever outside the home even in their own yards. I know this is a restriction enforced by some communities.

Actually if there is a breed ban, usually the animals have to be removed from the city. I live in Denver where there is a stupid ban on Pit Bulls. It was a huge ordeal and all these idiots had this power rush and went to people's homes and confiscated their pit bulls (purebred or mixes) and took them away to be euthanized just like that. Others were notified sooner and were able to get their dogs out of the city. That was only in the city of Denver. My friend lives in Commerce city which is next to Denver and he has to have liability ins. on his dogs and has to have a stupid sign that says "viscious dog". He has complied with all the rules to be able to keep his dogs, but says he is constantly being harrased by the city. There are similar laws in other suburban areas of Denver, but only Denver has the ban. There is an organization here that rescued all the pitbulls they could, but they are so full because they have to be very picky of the area the dogs are adopted into :(. This concerns me because pretty soon, they might start banning other breeds and even though we all know Boxers are great dogs, they do have the look that many people would consider scary or dangerous. Thats not the dogs fault though, and I think before banning, they should have strict owner rules or requirements.

I live in the city limits & they have banned Doberman's, Pit's & Rott's. Also if you have one of these breeds it is very difficult to get homeowners insurance, if not next to impossible. They did put in a "grandfather clause" & said if you owned them before a certain date & didn't want the animal destroyed your other option was to put up a 6 foot chain link fence with razor wire atop, double chain dog in backyard & chainlinks have to meet certain restrictions, & you also have to have so many warning beware of dog signs posted, there also have to be permits & licenses on file with police department & animal control. It was unbelievable what they wanted these people to do who owned these animals. All because of a few bad people who screwed up the breed. There is this young couple who live around the corner from me & they own 2 BIG Rott's. These 2 are so sweet. I don't even like the breed at all. These 2 are as good as my big cat. But they came from an extremely recommended breeder who takes deposits 1 yr in advance & then lets you come & pick puppies. Now I can see why. But those 2 are crate trained & inside except for their daily walks & that's it.

In the good ol' USA, we have this thing called FREEDOM. Does that not include freedom to choose whatever type of dog you wish??? I feel that breed banning is completely stupid. Bad dogs are created by bad owners, or perhaps from poor blood lines. Any responsible and knowledgable pet owner knows that. In southwestern PA, or at least in my town, I haven't heard of any breed banning yet, but I know A LOT of people who own boxers, rotties, great danes, pit bulls, and any other 'aggressive breed' as people call them, and they are ALL sweet dogs with very sweet, responsible owners. I know all the people in my area would be really upset about banning dogs, especially if they'd have to muzzle their dogs even in their own yard. I know there would be MUCH protesting if that ever happened here....

Find out...

...if your locality is considering breed banning. You can't help educate your fellow citizens if you don't get involved. Many ordinances get passed without the citizens finding out until its too late simply because many folks don't keep up with what's going on in their local governments. ;)

I couldn't imagine someone coming to my home and taking my dog just because it is considered "dangerous". I feel so bad for these poor people who have to give up or chain up their perfectly nice harmless dogs just because of a select group who destroyed the reputation of a breed.

I hope this doesn't come about in my area but if it does I will be one of the first to stand up for these poor dogs and people!

There is a ban within the Cincinnati city limits only on pit bulls but I know for a fact they do not enforce it. Sorry but the police department has too many other issues to take care of then to worry about a dog. Take care of the rapist, murderers and pedifiles and leave the dogs alone!!! How many times do you hear of the above incidents vs a dog attacking someone!!! Concentrate on something that will actually make a difference in society!!
