Hi Boxerworld,

My name is Sayra and I am new to this board. I have a boxer mix named Tyson. His a year and a half old. On his lower jaw I have noticed that it is scabby and has lost some hair. I was wonder if anyone knew what this maybe from. He doesn't seem in pain and it doesn't seem to bother him.

Thanks in advance,
Sayra

There are several possibilities. Did Tyson scratch or injure himself somehow? Could it be a patch that is in the process of healing? Other possibilities are allergies, though I'm not sure about scapping and allergies, and mange. Does he have any other bald patches on his face or front legs...or anywhere else for that matter? If the place does not improved, I'd probably take him to the vet to determine what's causing it. Good luck!

Oh, I forgot to ask. Is the hairless place red or inflamed at all?

Yeah Tyson is always running into the wall or hitting his face somewhere. That is the only patch that he has. It isn't red or inflamed. It just kind of bald with little stublets of hair. A friend of mine suggested putting a raw egg in his good. How long do you think I should give it until I go to the vet? I've never dealt with this before. Thanks Becky:)

Sheesh. I'm no expert on this. I'm hoping someone else will respond. The reason I asked so many questions is my girl, Tae, has mange and she has hairless patches that are pink (not inflamed).

What I can tell you is, if it is mange, there's no massive rush to go to the vet--as in you need not rush to the vet tomorrow or even next Monday, etc. in a panic. My vet prefers to watch the mange for a while before doing anything, though others dont' feel that way. Again, though, he may just have allergies or have run into something. Tae occasionally has little hairless places on her back feet where she's scratched herself. She once had such a patch on her face and the hair grew back in about a month.

Hopefully some others will write in with ideas/suggestions.

I had heard about adding egg to the food, but again, I'm not so up on that.

Thanks Becky. I guess I will just keep an I on it. Hopefully it doesn't get any worse. Is there any over the counter medication that I could put on it?

Again, I'm not expert on this. I'd probably watch it, really. If you know he scratched him self you could put an antibiotic ointment on it. That's what I did with Tae's nose before I knew she had mange. Of course, it didn't get better, since it was mange. I had on of the mods on this board recommend Derma Dream, a natural salve, to me the other day. It's good for cuts and scratches. I bought some, but it was a lot--$11.99!!!

Good news. I started treating the mange with ivermectin last week and some of her spots already look better! One week of treatment down and 5 to go. Tae HATES the medication, so it is rather difficult to administer.
